i have a 93 escort, 170k. its my first car, and ive spent the year i've had it maintaining it well, replacing parts which might need replacing. fixing anything that is broken. its in decent shape, body-wise. it gets over 40mpg on the highway. and ive put a used tranny in it, new clutch, new brakes, water pump, timing belt, and soon thermostat, and a few other bits and pieces.
i love this car, but really dont have a good impression about how reliable it is. im about to go on what basically amounts to a 9 month road trip, and it will be hard to find another car in a hurry if my baby dies with no warning.
what do you think? besides the little things that go wrong, is there something that could happen to this car that would mean id need a new car? something i shoudl inspect for now? how predictable is an old, well maintained escort?
presumably ill have access to junkyards along the way, but theres no way i can replace an engine, etc, on the road.
thanks,
anthony

A Broken timing belt or loss of coolent is about the only thing that will stop you in your track's...usally but really any thing can happen.
Since your's is fairly new, should be fine. I'd just double check the rest of the belts and fluid levals, how's the battery?

sounds like you're taking good care of your car...a year ago i sold my 91 lx wagon with 240,000 miles on the clock...i sold it to my ex-wife and she's very abusive to her cars...the damn thing is still runnin' fine...even the 4 year old walmart battery...lol
