looks aight. My question...What good does it do?
mentel

It allows someone like me with no drawing skill to properly make a proportionate vehicle render. I really suck at this drawing thing. Cant get persepective right if my life depended on it, so this would be nifty to use

I know that, but how?
It's like a square piece of cardboard, with three curved twigs glued on?

its a piece of wood with three grooves routed in with a router and a stencil type thing with buttons on it that slides in the grooves to allow you to draw everything at perspective

Oh my god. Everyone can draw. Alex, lemorris, zwofurti, all artists from this forum, all your stuff is worthless now.
IS THAT STILL ART?????

In my opinion it's just like Ran said. I even dont use a ruler. Well, OK, for technical drawings I guess it's helpfull

If you (knightvisn), didnt know, Alex uses a grid which is actually a tool, made with a RULER, and zwoforti used too use a ruler before and maybe now, too get the drawing as perfect as possible, (zwoforti: correct if wrong). A lot of artists use tools.

this is to help me develop my perspective skills. to let me know that im doing it right. all car drawers use some sort of perspective line to map the general shape of the car.

Tools are tools...it really doesn't matter how you draw it...all that matters is what it looks like.
This thing looks like a nifty gadget, but If you don't have vision, insight, desire, and in many cases hunger it's not gonna matter.
If that tool is going to make a perfect render for you, then after using it you should be able to see that perfect render on your own.
Everything we all use can be called tools...."tools of the trade"... Pencil, pen, computer, ruler, eraser, and soul.
Just draw

oh sorry for the double post but
Mentel,
There is no shortcut. It's "Time in Craft". Every time you put pencil to paper you get better. I use tools all the time. I have full ellipse sets, about 100,000 french curves, and every computer program known to man, but the art comes from the heart.
Regardless of technical methodology art exisits between the lines. I often find myself on the edge of a curve.
WHERE'S BONZ!!!
He knows what I'm trying to say.
WHERE's ROBODUCK?
Another technical illustrator who's artistic upbringing is planted firmly in the ink well.
WHERE'S AL?
A guy who talks the talk and draws the walk.
3 things will get you there Mentel.
Practice, Practice, and Practice.
Don't let go.

Ok, Ok, it's all right. I just tried to draw without my pencil. It did not work. I know, using tools seperates us from the animals. I found out that I use tools and gadgets all the time, as much as possible, but as less as possible when I'm drawing. I'm not an Amish.
Maybe some of use need that to see that there is something you can do without any tools, gadgets, software and that stuff. Just eyes, brain and hand. And soul, like lemorris said.
Um... its getting a bit philosophic now. :uhoh:
I'm very interested in what the drawings looks like. Good luck!

I agree with you.
But in my opinion you should be able to draw without the tools, and let them be there to only help you not do the drawing for you. If a tool is going to make shapes and lines, I don't see anything nice in that, even if it actually turns out nice. You must have the talant, soul (i'm sure most of us have that :lol2:) and just practice like you said.

see what you guys dont understand what im trying to say, frustrating.
I'm planning on using this as an aid to develop my skill as far as proper perspective goes. That's as sim ple as it gets, im not going into full blown detail. If you guys cant understand what I'm trying to accomplish, then oh well. It's for my own PERSONAL satisfaction. Im not out there to impress shit all. so all you pros go ahead and use nothing but your pencil, i'm going to use my nifty tool that im making to train myself ho w to become such a master as yourself. :)

ok, to get you guys back on track.....
this little gadget..the "perspective board".....the way I see it, you can only get ONE perspective, lame if you asked me. I like just using the horizontal and vertical "vanishing point" method if I am getting anal about things. free hand usually works for me, though my drawings are usually just sketches to give life to my models before they are done, so I can stay inspired.

I don't get where this gadget is any better than a normal board and a normal ruler. You just need 2 or 3 horizon point and have your ruler passing by one of those every time you draw a line.

Yeah, I think that gnasha's right....
IMHO, if drawing the boxes is what you're having trouble with- just practice drawing boxes in different persectives. Having the ability to do this spontaneously is quite an accomplishment.
If you don't understand the theory behind how lines vanish to the horizon, then get a book on it-and study it a bit. Sounds lame, but it will help.
It all depends on what you're after, really. If you want to do realistic stuff, learn your technique- there's no substitute. if you wanna do 'toons, draw what you like until it looks right- and develop your own style as you go.
But don't be afraid of practicing- and really going through some paper-over and over.
And really, if an apparatus of some kind helps your confidence right now-then go for it.

Gadgets.....Computers.....Tools.....French Curbs...Rulers.
Seen it done it.
Mentel,
This should be a great tool for you to practice your perspectives and then go with free hand after you master the vanishing points.
Every drawing....I don't care what it is, always starts with a box/boxes...even faces.
I've use Drafting tables for years for art and architectural/furniture drawings and computers for my engineering drawings and trust me....everything helps if you know how to use it.
Start your drawing on your gadget with very light lines and create your details freehand afterwards.........should be fun for you.
Don't forget to post your first drawing so these guys can see what can be done.......and yes this is ART.

Thanks for the KIND words chevelle. Seems like you're the only one here that really understands what I'm out to accomplish here. I'm still having trouble routing the curves into the plywood. Need to figure out how to correctly measure them, quite tricky.

I didn't think that what I said was so negative.....just offered an opinion- but also acknowledged that the tool was something that could be good for your confidence. Everything that you learn will come in handy later- that's for sure. It all adds up.
Although I do believe in learning the basics-like everybody else had to. I'll also acknowledge that it can be boring and tedious to do so.
I guess that confidence is pretty important early on- it helps you get through all of the ugly drawings (speaking from experience) and keep learning. That being said, anything that helps your confidence level has to be good.
Go for it.
