New Wheels: Question

I've had the same tires since july, and there's barely any tread on the front tires, i mean another few weeks and they'll be slicks! I'm trying to choose between 15 and 16 inch wheels, maybe even 17's if the price is right (but i've heard they're too heavy). I know that if i buy 15's with a certain tire size the speedo will remain the same, but with any other size the speedometer will be thrown off. What can you do about it? Just live with it? Or is there a setting or something you can calibrate or change so that it'd read correctly? And if there is something to change, how do i do it?

Also, i'm looking for nice 5 spoke rims with some low pro tires. Are there any good sites you know about that you'd recommend? I figure since i'm already buying new tires might as well get the wheels too and be done with it ^_^

If you get anything bigger than 15" and don't have a drop, you could cause people to barf.

If you've only had your tires for six months and there allready bald you have something wrong. You can go to just about any transmission shop and they can re calibrate your speedo for you.

:werd: I had 17's before I had my car dropped and it looked like a 4x4 Civic.

^ lol

the tires weren't new when i got the car, i just finished em off, not to mention lots of burnouts n donuts when i first got the car (stupid i know, but its my first car i had to have fun with it lol)

so any transmission shop can recalibrate it? i think i'm going to go for 16's and if it looks too high imma get the gas shocks

K, found a nice tire/wheel package online at treadepot.com. I can get 4 16-inch wheels with matching tires and the works, for $550. So pretty much $140 or so per wheel, with tires and everything. Here's a pic of the ones i'm looking at:

http://www.treadepot.com/images/b2c/groups/kt105.jpg

whatcha think? if you go on the site, click on "package deals", then click on passenger cars, and the wheels are called "KTP Type 105"

I love gun metal, but i dunno on a white car, if that yours in the avitar...

But its your car and your choice...

i have 15s on my hatch i just got not even a month ago, they look good since my cars been droped, tires for 15s arent too high in cost either, i have falken ziex (forget the model #) and they were 55 a peice, didnt think that was bad, they grip and go...

tires aren't too bad in price for 15s 16s even 17s. I went to a shop and saw some motegi mr7s, i wanted to get em but the price was out the roof , and the guy at the shop was about to close at 5:20 when it says 5:30 so they were being gay waiting for me at the door while i'm trying to look at the stuff

Your speedo might be off by a unnoticeable difference though. Maybe 1-2 mph error which isn't enough to justify getting your speedo recalibrated. My friend works at a speedo recalibration shop and he says even with the changing weather your speedo can be off as much as 5mph when the seasons change.

If you get 15s for your year car you would need 195/50x15".

But as someone mentioned before if your tires only lasted 6 months you have an alignment problem. My tires usually last about 1.5 years before getting new ones. So before getting new tires get an alignment 1st or you will just have the same dilemna.

icE_x
12-29-2004, 09:04 AM
yea, i plan on getting a shop to give me an alignment and then put the new wheels on, some cheapo place like pepboys or something

ty for info on speedo, i'll hafta look up one of those calculators that tells you how much it will be off. Not good if a cop is right on ur bum tho, goin 55 in a 50 by accident and he feels like pullin ya over :) but how often does that happen? lol

i originally wanted 15's but i figured 16's would look a lil nicer. Plus the wheels are only available in 16's and 17's. I looked up a catalog and they look almost EXACTLY like motegi wheels...and way cheaper

CBURKE
12-29-2004, 09:17 AM
Jwood88 yes they do, i had them on my integ and i would hit my 50sht right out the hole and it would lock and go. i would get a nice black or gun color wheel and stay at 15 to 14 just if you wanna lower the car. if you get 16 to 17 it is hard to get a 185 to 195ser tire that will not hit the finder, but if you get 14's or 15's get the azenus (falken) they might not last as long as you like, but at 50 to 60$ a peace who cares.

icE_x

i don't think they'll hit the fender unless i lower the car

and is graphite another name for gunmetal? cuz they offer that color as well

turtlecrxsi
12-29-2004, 10:01 AM
I think graphite is light grey but it's probably similar. Gunmetal is the same as Gunpowder Grey or Anthracite.

CBURKE
12-29-2004, 10:57 AM

yes graphite is like gunmetal well kinda, both look good.

icE_x
12-29-2004, 11:25 AM
i probably will, but i don't know how far i'll be able to lower it before the tires start scraping the body of the car

90Civic4G
12-29-2004, 11:26 AM
You can have 16s on a 4th gen and still lower it...you just won't be able to go down much.

CBURKE
12-29-2004, 11:31 AM
or turn lol j/k yeah you can just cant have anything bigger then 185ser tire. i think right? i would rather go with A 14 and a 195/50

Can you buy 14'' rims that aren't wires? The lowest import performance rim I've ever seen was a 15. I think 14s are a bit too "mexican."

icE_x
12-29-2004, 11:48 AM
i think the wheels come with 205's on em, toyo proxies - is that a prob?

CBURKE
12-29-2004, 12:47 PM
yes 205 is to wide.

and what is wrong with mexican wheels? you telling me you don't like the deep dish 5star that sticks out so far you could drip over the wheel, a u turn is a 5 point turn. i love them.......j/k ;oP-----

There are some that would say 14s are fine... like my 1986 CRX Si rims that weigh like 9lbs... and let's do some math... that's uh, 18 years old and I have put them through some abuse and they still spin like new...

205 is fine for 16... that's why they sell 205/40-16s...

CBURKE
12-29-2004, 01:05 PM
yeah but the wheel well is not big enough for that size tire. it's to wide it will be lined up with the fender

Are you sure about that? We're talking about 10mm which is 1cm. Plus, 4g civics have a decent flare to their fenders anyway. I think it depends more on the rim itself and how decent the struts are. If a 4g can fit 205/40-17s with a slight drop I'm sure the 16s will work.

I have 17" TSW Revo's with a 40mm offset and 205/40/17 tires lowered 1.5" (about, maybe a hair less) and I never rub on my fender or anything.

vladlos
12-29-2004, 02:10 PM
yea, i have 16s with 205/40-16 or something like that for my tires. and it stays just inside my fender. i had my car lowered as far as i could lower it on my coilovers a few months ago and i had absolutely no tire rub at all.

I saw this post and thought I would ask a few wheel/tire quesstions. So I am planning on getting some Yokohama tires, but i'm not sure which ones to get..I live in Oregon so it is fairly damp here..and I need some wheels that look a little Euro..but every damn one I find is 17 and up..I need 16's.. I know I should research this myself and I have been for awhile..but I need input.

CBURKE
12-29-2004, 04:43 PM
vladlos so your telling me it never rubed? i had 16's with 205/40 and they would hit my finder every bump and it was only lowerd about 1 1/4, but you know my struts where pretty bad to so that might be y. (my bad)

SiZ
12-29-2004, 07:47 PM
Its all about offset, it doesn't matter if you have 185s, if the offset on the rim isn't right its going to rub no matter how small your tires are.

Lots of guys are tucking 225/40/17s on Hondas.

The distance from the center of the rim to the hub mounting surface.

dude go w/15" rims. I don't really like the rims on the first page, I'm not much for aftermarket wheels. I say go w/some GS-R fat fives (that's what I have) or some Si's. I have a 2" drop on my car w/15" wheels and a 205/50/15 tire, my tires only rub when I take turns at high speeds and my alignment and camber are out of whack, just get a proper alignment/camber setup when you get your wheels put on, and get some nice shocks/springs.

icE_x
12-31-2004, 08:02 AM
so you're saying go for more of a factory look? if i find a really good deal on some factory rims i'll buy those - imma search ebay today. But if i dont find any i'm goin with the KTP :)

40mm offset and 4x100 bolt pattern?

vladlos
12-31-2004, 08:58 AM
i think the farthest i lowered my car on my coilovers was like 3.5ish, maybe a tad less. and no, my tires didnt rub or hit my fenders.

12-31-2004, 09:46 AM
found some gsr rims on ebay, but they cost just as much as the aftermarket - so imma go with the KTP ones :P

i just got my new 17" 5zigens this week and i'd say it definately looks odd without being lowered. i have to decide within the next month or 2 if i'm just going to lower it or setup a full air ride. decisions decisions.. i'll get some pictures up of the rims this weekend.. pac
