What transmission will fit?

The overdrive gear has broken in my '89 extended cab 2.9 4x4 Ranger. I have already put money into work on the tranny a year ago, so looking to try to get another one inexpensive as possible. Does anyone know if the transmission from an '84 Ranger will work? If not, what years would hook up correctly? Many thanks for any help.
