Comp Cam 280H & Timing

I have recently purchased a 69 stingray in which the former owner had installed a Comp Cam 280H. I have been doing some light restoration and weekend tune up work. I am a novice when it comes to engine tuning but learning quickly. My question is this. If a performance cam is installed on a stock Chevy 350, is it necessary to readjust timing. the specs call for 4deg BTDC on a 350/300 with automatic transmission (this being the stock cam I presume). Anyone know if this needs to be readjusted with the 280H cam installed? Also, the Comp website indicates that when you install an agressive cam like the 280H you should also install aftermarket ignition and intake manifold. I do not really want to replace the original parts to this Vette unless it will truly gain some HP. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks to all in advance!

you can leave at 0 or 4 advance or -4 retard if your talking about deg of the cam.if your talking about timing it with a timing light run it at factory or ajust it by ear if its to advanced youll lose power if its to retard it will be hard to start or buck the starter

I had this same cam in a 350 in an S-10 that I used to own. I had a holley 650 and a Edelbrock performer RPM intake,headers,flowmasters,MSD 6AL. This combo really worked for street performance. It was a good mix of power without the headache of the super big cam/high compression. I would change the carb and intake ,not caring about whats orig. just put the orig stuff up for keeps......now for the timing I tried using a light but that didnt seem to give me the best performance,so I had a trusted buddy put the truck in gear and with the E brake set and foot on the brake, then he would step on the gas and I would move the distr. untill I heard no more knocking. this seemed the best set-up.
