Do you have to take out the rear deck?

you can take out the rear deck if you feel you need to but often time the little pins and hooks holding it on will brake.
i have found it easy to take the speaker covers off with a flat head screw driver. once off use a screwdriver with a flexable shaft to get the four screws out. also once you take one screw out be sure to put it in the side compartment in the back. this way you will not have to search for missingg screws.
if you need any more details just ask. i have done it about 5-7 times.

I cant seem to pry the speaker grills off. They sure look like they will come off.
I called Best Buy and they said you had to take the rear deck out. I find that hard to believe, though.
You have a 96 Civic Lx Sedan also?

i have a 98 civic Ex coupe, but it should be very similar if not the exact same. (some one correct me if i am wrong)
it took me a little work to get the grill off for me to. i think i just wiggled it around then got under it and pried it up.

i changed the speakers in my 97 LX it was a pain in the ass!!!! also the the whole rear deck was molded as one piece, no grills. maybe your car is different, but i'm pretty sure that it's all one piece of plastic. to remove it you will have to get in the trunk and pop out all the plastic fasteners from underneath. i did it twice to tint the rear window and change the speakers out. it's not that hard but it does take a little time if you don't want to brake anything. hahahah that car is a cinch if you dont mind cheating!!! go upside down in the trunk and cut off all the little white tabs the hold the speaker screws in. then pull the 6x9 to the side and angle it out. it will be tough but it will come out. then bottom mount the new speaker. basically drill it up to the rear deck. hope this helps. i know that before i knew this trick i used to take out the whole rear but it doesnt have to be that hard. good luck

i just put new speakers in the back of my car, took the seat out and the side panels then the rear panel only took about an hour and half, couldn't tell you if yours is the same

yes the rear deck needs to be removed to get the speakers out. it is really easy if you get it the right way. i start at the seat belts and pop off all along the seats(with the seats folded down) then just kinda work and bend(not too much) and pull it out.
