I have a 1993 Thunderbird LX 2 dr coupe automatic and it has beeen sitting in my garage for about three months now because i can't get out of park. I turn my car on and it works fine but then i try to put it in reverse and its just stuck. The little button on the side of the shifter knob goes down but the shifter itself just doesnt go down. Also my brake light stays on even when i take the parking brake out of lock position. I had been working on installing a sound system and i had to unhook my batterry but i dont know if that caused the problem. I don't know what is the problem and neither do my freinds. Does anybody know anything that could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

you are depressing the brake pedal, correct? if so, you probably need to replace the brake switch. when you depress the brake pedal, it triggers a switch that allows the trans to be removed from park. probably need a new one.

hey daniel... can you always press the shifter button in, or only while you apply the brakes? and 8ate8... if the brake switch is broke, then would you still be able to press the shift button in if the brakes are applied?

I was pushing the brake down when itried to get into Reverse and I can push the button in when the brakes aren't applied but just the same it is still stuck. I'll try to see if that brake switch is what is causing the problem. Thanks for your help.

thats weird because you should not be able to press the button in w/o the brakes applied. If I was you I would make sure the button is functioning. Do the actual brake lights come on when you hit the brakes?

allright daniel if u can't get ut out of park here is my solution. yes check the lights and if u can't determine still take your run fuse fuse out under the dash.this will allow u to shift then take it to the shop. easy fix :-)
