I just went thru this in the Escort forum, since the radio's are the same I'll copy and paste it...
First you need 1 or 2 peices of wire coathangers bent into U shapes, about 5 inches from the bottom of the u to the forks on it. (10 inch wire bent in half or so.)
Copied:
"They go in about 2 inches, no more, there are 4 metal clips that are to be pushed in towards the radio, all Ford vehicles have these from like 91-96, and all the radio's are interchangeable. 10 Inches is way to far, that's past the radio. If you have a tape deck, stick your DIN pins in about 2 inches and put a finger in the tape deck and gently coax it out. If you dont have a tape deck, use a flathead screwdriver behind the faceplate GENTLY to pry it out while pressing on the DIN pins, which once you stick the coathangers in about 2 inches you can feel and push away from the radio with the coathangers (Moving them in towards the pins inside the dash.)
Hope I helped..."

Yep, but what is even easier than using coat hanger is to buy the tool meant for that. It has two little balls on the end to hook inside and help pull the unit out. Only costs about $2 at Wal Mart.
