hey guys, i have just about got my new exhaust lined out on my rs, the cat that was on my car must have been the original cause it looks really bad inside, im going to get a set of headers for it and a high flo cat, what are the best brands for both (headers and cat), also i am still running the smog pump and all of that stuff.

Go with edelbrocks smog / air tubed headers , you can pick them up for pretty cheap. I have a set if you want to pay for shipping. Also , I used a magna flow hi flow catalytic converter and it works wonders . You can get like aa 2 1/2" or a 3" , which ever you prefer , I'd go with 3" for more flow.

Take your old cat , Turn it on end and spray a water hose in it..see how much shit comes out..it's horrible.

yeah i turned it up and just hit it on the driveway and you should have seen the soot/deposits come out of it. i believe that i will go with the 3 inch pipes, and keep my flo master muffler that i have had on the car for the last 3 years, i have put probally 20k miles on that muffler and its really loud, i cant wait to see what it sounds like when a 350 is breathing through it.

I put a 350 in mine , had flo tech fab up a cutsom y pipe , running singlemagna flow cat at 3" In and Exit , Running a new muffler i just got , Hi-flo , A under company of flowmaster. And to my surprise it's actually quieter than the stock set up but I feel the difference in accel , revs , etc. 3" is a nice set up.

he's still running all his smog equipment tho, so gutting it isn't really an option...

I dont have any suggestions for you but was wondering if you might know what would make a cat. glow cherry red if it is not clogged?

well im sure someone will disagree but your exhaust gets hot enough to do that. for example, the mesh inside can glow red very easily, i wouldn't be surprised if the cat did depending on the car and how much it's used.

So if my car was overheating while we were testing it in the garage... witch was the reason for testing it in the first place... I could just be glowing with no problem? or do you think that it does that while i am driving it down the road?

actually, while i wouldnt mind running a random tech cat, i in fact have a catco converter. it was cheaper, and still does a decent job. when i put the 302, new headers (the edlebrocks perform great but i cant stand not being able to swap spark plugs) and a chambered exhaust, ill probly also install a random tech hi flow cat.

if you're overheating for long enough a lot more than just the cat could glow red ;-) but yeah i've had a friend with an eclipse gst for example, his turbine housing would get bright red after a night of racing. when things like that happen you wanna make sure you have good gaskets and such.
