'88 RX7 GX clutch problems

I searched around and couldn't find anything that definitively explained what could be wrong with my clutch.
anyway, for about 4 or 5 days when the cluthc was fully depressed i could hear a rattling which would also occur when the gear engaged, then suddenly the clutch went right to the floor with no resistance and i could no longer use the clutch to engage or disengage any gears. so i muscled it into second gear and drove it home where it's been sitting for the last week. would this be indicative of the master/slave cylinders being broken or leaking, or would it be a problem with the clutch assebly itself. the smell of burning clutch preceeded the rattling for about a week, i just was paying enough attention to notice it, i only remember now as an afterthought. anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
