Last night, a 8.9 magnitude earthquake started in the Indian Ocean, which made a Tsunami 20 meters high. The wave hit land, and reports are coming in that 12,600 people are presumed dead, thousands are injured, and millions are left without a home.

More news later.

From news:
------
London, December 26: The world's fifth strongest quake in a century hit southern Asia on Sunday, triggering a speeding tsunami that crashed into Sri Lanka and India and swamped tourist islands in Thailand and the Maldives.

Here is a factbox showing the 10 strongest earthquakes in the last century by magnitude.

May 22, 1960 - Chile - An earthquake measuring 9.5 struck Santiago and Concepcion, triggering tidal waves and volcanic eruptions. Some 5,000 people were killed and 2 million made homeless.

March 28, 1964 - Alaska - An earthquake and ensuing tsunami claimed 125 lives and caused about $311 million in property loss. The quake, measuring 9.2, was felt over a large area of Alaska and in parts of western Yukon TerritAmbani vs Ambani

March 9, 1957 - Alaska - An earthquake measuring 9.1 hit the Andreanof Islands. On Umnak Island, Mount Vsevidof erupted after being dormant for 200 years, generating a 15-metre high tsunami that continued to Hawaii. Nov 4, 1952 - Russia - An earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 generated a tsunami which struck the Hawaiian islands. No lives were lost.

Dec 26, 2004 - Indonesia - A quake measuring 8.9 struck the coast of Aceh province on the northern Indonesian island of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed thousands in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and India.

Jan 31, 1906 - Ecuador - An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 struck near the coast of Ecuador and Colombia, generating a strong tsunami that killed up to 1,000. It was felt all along the coast of Central America and as far north as San Francisco and west to Japan.

Feb 4, 1965 - Alaska - Measuring 8.7, the quake generated a tsunami reported to be about 10.7 metres high on Shemya Island.

Aug 15, 1950 - Tibet/India - Two thousand homes, temples and mosques were destroyed in a quake measuring 8.6. Hardest hit was the Brahmaputra Basin in northeast India. At least 1,500 people were killed.

Feb 3, 1923 - Russia - Kamchatka was struck by a quake with a magnitude of 8.5.

Feb 1, 1938 - Indonesia - An 8.5 magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea generated tsunamis causing great damage on Banda and Kai, volcanic islands in eastern Indonesia.
-----
Keep in mind that it's a logarithmic scale; each .1 of strength makes the quake 10 times more powerful...

Thanks and good luck.It won't be at all pretty over there. We've only seen the tip of the iceberg so far, it will take a lot of hard work to ensure that the after-effects are not more deadly than the waves.

It's times like this that the world has to work together.Fortunately, the UN already has a forward supply network in some of the affected areas because of the unstable polical situation in Sri Lanka.

i'm uneducated because I don't read and watch the news. I guess we are going over there for 45-60 days. I was told that the disease problem is because of their religion they can not burn the dead. so they are burrying them and keeping the disease around. Not sure if that's the deal... that's just what I heard. anyway... I look forward to actually doing something for once. I'll keep you posted on the real deal over there in Thailand if I can!

taranaki

latest reports on the situation are grim very hot and humid over there, far too many bodies to count or recover quickly. Mass burials are proceeding as fast as possible with minimal identification.Victims are being fingerprinted and photographed for future identification where possible.Secondary deaths due to water - related disease and decomposing bodies is a real risk. It's hard to imagine the population of a small city removed by a natural disaster in such a quick fashion. What's even harder to comprehend is the amount of destruction, and the distances that it covers. The disaster has only just started.Hundreds of miles of populated coastline are without clean water or habitable shelter.

Even stranger (scarier?) is that some scientists are saying that this quake was so big, that it might have slowed-down the Earth's rotation permanently.

hotter days...colder nights..

look at the good side, we might go over 24 hours per rotation but it'l take a while for the work day to go up!!!

seriously though i heard someone saying that a lot of people could have been saved if a warning had have been issued but it wasn't because diplomaticaly the country where the quake occurred is meant to warn people and they didn't so others that knew didn't... has anyone seen anything on this? cause that woud suck!

It is now 80,000. (its serious when it goes up by 5000 in 2 posts)

The worst thing is that a relative's friend in penang could be dead. I dont really know if somebody died or not, my mother doesnt talk about it. But they all felt the earthquake there in the morning. It was quite powerful, furniture dropping all around..

(I keep thinking if the quake was a little closer to singapore, this island would be some forgotten underwater city by now)

To put it into perspective, the death toll is sitting at 21 times more than September 11. That's what shocked me the most.

It only gets worse from here on sadly.

World Entertainment News Network:

"Martial arts superstar Jet Li risked death in the Maldives at the weekend when he and his daughter were caught up in the tsunamis that rocked Asia. The Hero star was vacationing when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Sumatra early on Sunday, generating waves of up to 40 feet high, which swamped coastal areas and claimed the lives of more than 52,000. Li and his daughter dashed to safety when a wall of water surged into the hotel where they were staying, according to family friends. The pair dashed to higher ground, where Li called his agent to assure him they were OK. "

In terms of the wider implications........does anyone really give a fuck?

the toll counted so far is equivalent to

50 Titanics
or
30 Pearl Harbors
or
300 Lockerbie Pan-Am bombings
or
470 Oaklamoma City bombings
or
6000+ Columbine high schools

The worst is that there are still many unaccounted for,and many who will die of their injuiries and subsequent disease through the total demolition of even the most basic of infrastructure.Hospitals, roads, water treatment ,sewer systems...all are gone.

by the time you read this, the figures will be obsolete again. It will be months before the true toll is known. One thing is for certain...it won't go down.

As you will see ,there are too many bodies to count, and scarcely a soul left standing to count them.
The impact of the water has swept away everything in the ground floor of both buildings, knocking the right hand building clean off its foundations.

Scenes like this are repeated along hundreds of miles of coast, spanning several countries. Some of the regions hardest hit had precious little in the way of infrastructure in the first place.dirt track access and frail bridges are gone, all aid services will have to be airlifted in,as road and port facilities are non existent in the wake of thr tsunami.

I'm not sure when the local news started releasing it, but I heard about it after they had already left. Additionally, in my experience with the surface fleet, it was OK to talk about where you had been after the fact, unless specifically directed not to. It may have been a Public Affairs release. God knows both the US and the military could use some good spin right now.

Found on another forum, person that was in Maldives:

-----
posted 28th December 2004 11:18 Maldives

We operated to Male on Christmas day and were staying on a tiny island 40 mins by boat from Male, in the south Atoll.

The island was one of 3 connected by wooden jettys. We arrived at about 0100 local and had a moonlight stroll on a pristine idyllic beach. We were staying on the west side of the island, less than 20 feet from the sea edge.(consider it takes 20 seconds to reach the other side).

0610 I woke up with my bed shaking - confused as to what was happening but then realised it must have been a tremor. Went back to sleep.

Woke up 0900 local, pottered around, opened the door and saw a wall of water coming towards me. Tried to close the door behind me but it got wrenched out of my hand. At this stage the water was up to our thighs.

To cut a long story short, this happened about 3 times and a significant amount of time was spent up a tree - both myself and the pilots. We went over to the east side of the island and the destruction was horrendous. Everybody had been having breakfast on the veranda overhanging the sea when the wave smashed into them. Obviously, we were much more sheltered on the west side and as a result very, very lucky. The violence of the wave had totally destroyed the jettys connecting the islands.

We had to stay on the island - no power, running water, sanitation. No boat could get in or out to the island because of the reef and surrounding debris. We were finally evacuated at 0700 yesterday morning.

We still are not sure of injuries/deaths on our island, it did appear, however, that everybody was ok thank god but they were still doing head counts when we left. This is something I will never forget - even though what I saw was calm compared to what the poor people in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc experienced. The enormity of what has happened is staggering and something that will affect me for a long time yet.

The 2 boys with me were fab. The resort workers were amazing - they still managed to feed us and look after us even after all the destruction.

Our aircraft was fine - the water had gone about halfway up the landing gear but no damage done.

My thoughts are with ALL those people who have been affected by this, crew or otherwise, however they have been affected.

A sad, sad time.

I agree with Taranaki about the Jet Li story. But he is not the only major star/celebrity that has been talked about in the media. There was this super model that survided and the media is all over it like white on rice. Its patethic, over 114,000 dead (as of this morning ) and all they talk about is the supermodel, Jet Li, give me a break.

Another thing that pissed me off was the fact that some media guy (can't remember who) actually had the nerve to compare it to the tragic event of 911. Are we that arrogant (like the rest of the world loves to think of us) that we actually are comparing over 114, 000 lost lives to 3000. Damn.

Hey taranaki, I can't see the image, I ago get an error message.
