1994 Grand Am - sputters

My son's 1994 Grand Am recently started sputtering. This would happen when he first started the car - and most recently while out on the highway going 65+ mph. We replaced the spark plugs - and now it won't start. Besides replacing the spark plug caps, is there anything else we can do to get this car running again?
Could the sputtering be caused by a bad ignition coil?
Any help would be appreciated!

could actually be a bad alternator - also sounds like the cat converter could potentially be plugged. I dunno about the coil though - I guess you could try it if it wasn't the cat or alternator.

If it is cranking but wont fire, check for spark on each wire. Pull off each wire at a time put one of the old plugs in it and touch it to the block while someone cranks over the engine and check for spark. (Use a pair of long needle nose pliers when you do this and hold the rubber cap not the plug. You will get a good jolt if you hold the plug and your pliers are not rubber coated on the handle) If the wires are original on the car, I suspect you have a bad wire and would replace them anyways given the age. If you find you don't have spark at two of the plugs, then that coil is bad.
