How do I get to replacing the driver side brake light? Do I have to take all the carpet off the underside of the trunk?

Rear Lamp/Stoplight
Removal and Installation:
1. From inside luggage compartment, remove lower back panel trim cover.
2. Remove rear lamp sockets from rear lamp body.
3. Remove bolts and grommet retaining rear lamp body to lower back panel. Remove rear lamp.
4. Note: Inspect rear lamp retaining bolts to make sure seal is intact or a water leak may result.
To install, reverse Removal procedure.

What about the brake light that is behind the rear seats (visible in the rear windshield) ?
How do I get to those lights to replace them?

Got your fix right here. This is 1996, but they should be identical.

Lamp, Rear Hi-Mount
Lamp Assembly
Removal and Installation
1. Open luggage compartment door.
2. Remove trim panel below package tray.
3. Lower rear of bracket and relay module tray assembly.

4. Disconnect lamp electrical connector.
5. Remove screws and clips of two most rearward clips which hold the rear hi-mount lamp to the package tray panel.
6. Squeeze legs of the four remaining clips together and push rear hi-mount lamp upward.
7. Remove lamp from inside the vehicle.
8. To install, reverse Removal procedure.

4. Remove snap in bulb holder from the bottom of the lamp.
5. Replace miniature bulbs and install bulb holder back into the lamp.
6. Raise and secure bracket and relay.
7. Install package tray trim panel.
8. Test lamp for proper operation.
