i own a 1989 dodge dakotathe 4 cylinder engine with a holley carburator. I was driving down the road one day and 1st and 2nd gear went out but before that when i would shift into 4th gear i would lose speed what should i do about that just get a new transmission cuz 1t and 2nd gear wont lock they are just super loose and also when i try to start the truck it just clicks what could the problem be is it the battery or starter? the alternator is brand new i dont know too much about cars so the most in depth detail would be greatly appreciated thank you ahead of time

So you got it going once, and this was the same day you were driving it down the road and 1st and 2nd gear went out, and then when you shut it off it wouldn't start again? I'm confused. If it just clicks then how do you even drive it? Do you push start it all the time or what?

sounds like a battery problem if it just clicks. as far as the 1st and 2nd not working, you could have faulty sycronizers inside the tranny thus giving you the sloppy feel as it gets into gear.

ya it was the same day and when i actually try shifting into 1st or 2nd it wont go its as if its in neutral i wasnt sure about the battery but that was my idea but i wanna figure out whats wrong with the tranny before i do anything

your 1-2 sycronizer has worn itself out. The chance that the actual gears are sheared is very rare. You can either go to a tranny shop and have them rebuild it or go to a junkyard and find one; if they have that particular one.

A junkyard tranny, if you can find one, usually can run around $250 to $600.
