1968 was the last year that the VIN# had a code for SS. It was 38.
Your VIN# tells me this:
1 Chevrolet Division
C Chevelle
37 2dr Hardtop Coupe
H V8 2barrel 350 cu inch
2 1972 model year
R Built in Arlington, Texas
Last six digits are the production numbers.
Looks to me like it's not an SS with a 350 2 barrel carb 165 HP

Cruzn is right on his decode info. Additional note: The 72 SS could actually be ordered with the 2bbl 350, *but* the clincher is the "C" code. All 72 SS cars were based on the Malibu, which used a "D" code. So no SS here. The Heavy Chevy was a special model in 71-72, which included mostly SS equipment, and some special graphics & stripes, but was based on the Chevelle "C" platform, and most had 350 power, 2 or 4 bbl. So the car could possibly be a Heavy Chevy. Also, all basic (Non-SS) models had a wide rectangular speedometer, all SS & Heavy cars had the 3 large round gauge pods. If a non-SS car was ordered with the gauge package, it came with the round SS style speedo. Hey, if the price is right & the condition decent, even a plain old 'velle 350-2V is still a good investment & a cool car to have.

Robcal,
The car was not a Heavy, it was a Chevelle 2-Door Sport Coupe, Gulf Green exterior, Antique Dark Green interior, Coated Fabric seats. 350 2-bbl, Turbo 350, 10-Bolt rear with 2.73 gears. Confused about the seat code, one list I have says Buckets, the other says Bench. Which does it have? Still a good car if the price is right for the condition. Many of these have been cloned into SS's.
