I was given a '91 dodge dakota ext. cab with the 5.2 V8 in it. The lady said all it needed was a fuel pump. I towed it home (btw I got it for free) and now I am tinkering with it. Here is what is going on. It cranks good but don't start. I put a rag under the fuel injectors and the rag was soaked on both sides so this leads me to believe the fuel pump is doing its job. next I figure it aint getting spark havn't tested it yet. is there any way to test to see spark by yourself? or should I just wait till later and if so how do I test for spark at the spark plugs and the distributor?
Thanks and woohoo I got a free truck.

got it running like a top. The coil was grounding out against the firewall. Now drove back and forth and real hard pull to the right. found three loose bolts. one was on the torsion bar or trackbar thingy and the others are the two bolts on top of the upper arm that goes to the ball joint. Should be able to tighten those up and get a muffler and be ready to roll. Also it wont start in park but does in neutral. and when put in park sometimes it still rolls and dont go in park all the way any ideas on this? Not bad for a free truck. 318 V8's RULE

Sounds good. Pretty good to get a truck for Christmas huh? Even with those small problems I'd say you got a good deal...

318's do rule. Probably one of the best motors ever created.

If your truck is starting in neutral and not in park, you have a bad neutral safety switch. It's a round switch with a three prong connector coming out of the side of the transmission on the drivers side. Get you an 11/16 wrench and swap it out for a new one. The reason why it won't go into park all the way, sounds like your parking sprag has failed. There is a way to replace it, but it's very tedious and you've gotta be a tranny expert to do it. If you wanna make things easier, you can pull out the old tranny and put in another one. By the way, kudos on getting a free truck, wish I could be just as lucky!
