i've had my 96 with the 2.7, for 3 months, just mounted a p265 75r 15, almost a 31 inch tire, the 2.7 seems to run pretty strong, if you're worried about power, just change to a lower gear ratio in the diffs, if it already has'nt been changed, with 40 inch tires, i'd strongly suspect that the gears have already been changed, my 2.7 has 172k miles on it, runs like a top.

40's might be little big for the 4 cyl., unless it is regeared. But yes, i have a 2000 2.7 4x4 and I love it.

i have had my 2.7 for over two years now and it runs like a champ. It is a very nice engine. I don't really notice that it is a 4 banger very often, it holds highway speed well and manages hills decently. I really hope that truck you are looking at has gears.

I have a 2000 2.7L prerunner with 35's, after regearing runs fine. I take if off roading and it can even make some pretty steep hill climbs.

Here's a video of it:

2.7's are great! one day i was getting some bricks to put on the front of my house, there was a little more than a ton, my friend in his 4wd V6 tacoma had the same weight on his and i passed him on the highway like if he wasn't moving and the truck ran like if there was no weight on it. but my tacoma is stock except for the tornado and k&n. i know from just about all cars though that putting bigger gears gives u a lot more torque which is good for getting top speeds or for the power u need for lifting it with heavy tires.
