Friend of mine has a mecury tracer, 97 automatic. they bought it used.
We have noticed that when running the a/c, especially on max a/c, you can smell gasoline coming through in the cold air.
Today I popped the hood and there was a smell of gas when I opened the hood after driving the car for a bit.
Also, a rather dramatic drop in gas mileage has been noticed with the car over the last couple of months.
Any help or suggestions would be apprceiated.

Your friend has a leak in the fuel feed line or at the fuel pump. I would recomend replacing fuel parts before he has himself an engine fire.

Or blows himself up. I have a '91 Mercury Tracer and I can smell gas if I put too much fuel in the tank. Theres some kind of breather at the top of the tank right under the back seats. Come to find out mine was shooting gasoline out.
