Stuck in 4WD

I have a 1999 Passport EX. It has had problems with the 4WD from the beginning. It engages but does NOT like to back out. The dealer said it was a one time problem after my father first bought it and had the problem. We got the vehicle in 2001 and have had problems also. I took it to a mechanic I trusted rather than the dealer and my mechanic had no idea how to fix the issue either. I have followed the directions in the manual and it hasn't worked. I turn it off while driving (as suggested in the manual) and the 4WD stays on for DAYS!! Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Sounds like a shift on the fly actuator issue. TONS of posts on this board in regards to this issue. Check this thread: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=334853

I have the same problem the only way I can get to disengage is to make a series of tight turns left and right at slow speed, it seems to let the hubs unlock.
