HELP A YOUNG BEGGINEr OUT!!

HI, I just joined the crew as you can see. This site is great!!

I Have a 1994 DX civic hatch, and I have nothing under the hood. I just want to know, what can I do to get as many things as possible under my hood, and a cheap way to start?... I have big dreams a bout this car but I dont know where to start.

All opinions are welcome...... Help me out.!! :confused:

start with an intake..headers...exhaust..
then drop it..

but if u r gonna change or swap ur motor..might as well wait on the stuff i mentioned..and get em altogether for the new motor

What kind of money are you looking to spend on the car? Theres an infinite amount of things you can do to Civics. Are you looking to drag race it? autocross? circuit race?

Thank u guys for the help, it was great.. and I also have some good news. remember I said I had nothing under the hood?, well, I followed your advice and boutght a v-tech single cam head ($150) whit everithing included (spark plugs, injection and all that).

I feel realy lucky, because I have a D16 engine block and the head is a 1.6 so it will match nice.... about the headers, I'll buy somthing use...

I dont want my civic to fly, but at least to kik some old people ass!

just to let ya know, what you just added to your car did pretty much nothing to the cars performance except make it look nice and maybe make it run more smoothly and reliably depending on how the car's condition was. If you don't plant on spending much on your car but would like some performance then i would reccomend getting an intake or cold air intake, a good brand is AEM or Injen. That will make the car sound better and give it some more horsepower. The price ranges anywhere between 150 and 250 dollers depending on if its cold air or regular intake. Then as you go along i would recommend getting a catback exhaust system. It will add horsepower, looks, and sound. Then you could do a few little things to make the car more fun like adding a better clutch so you can do a launch more safely or add a short throw to get through the gears a lil quicker. Just make it more fun for you. Then to give it better handling, and an aggresive apearence i would agree with lowering it a like 2 to 3 inches. Then tint the windows can make it look more aggresive and sleek. Those are the most inexpensive mods i can think of but anyways you can go to sites like overboost.com/obs and type in your exact car and itll find all the parts u can put on, or a site like stillen.com when you first enter click on sport cars then you can type in you exact car model and do the same thing. good luck to ya..

I personally wouldn't trust stillen, but that's just me. A guy showed me an add in a magazine where they claimed their CAI gave you 15 hp, something like 10 for the cat-back, and like 20 for a header. It doesn't mean thye don't make good products, but it just shows that they don't know what they're talking about with hp claims.

But I agree with getting an intake and exhaust, it will help quite a bit along with the header.

when they say they give u 10 hp, its not 10 hp at peak hp range, its a series of hp increase through out the entire rpm range, so it could be 1 hp at 3000rpm, .5 hp at 3200rpm, 3 at 4000rpm etc....but swapping that vtec head for your non-vtec wasn't a bad move...u jsut need an ecu to make vtec work, try and civic ex ecu, and for SOHC CIVICS, factory intakes work better than most aftermarket...its just "sounds cool" with a cai but u lose hp, and if u want a cai, go with COMPTECH, they have some nice sleeper intakes, exh will definitely get u some tq and hp, and the whole tint thing, thats a waste of money, all around tints can cost u 100-250 depending on what u get, spend 250 on a comp cam....u get power, not looks...peace out

for a civic cai doesn't do anything, not even a "k&N" filter(k&n sucks anyways) the only reason ppl think its better is because the ripples in the stock tube denote the sound of air traveling in the intake, cai are str8 pipes no ripples to denote any noise...making it louder, dyno proven aem on sohc civic makes no diff. if anything u lose power...try it your self on a dyno, u dont want your intake piping smooth anyways, it doesn't travel into the head like manf. designed it 2.

What about the fact that its (hopefully) sucking up cooler air? Isn't that the entire point of the CAI? Getting some air from outside the engine compartment?

If you want to make the, maximum amount of power at a red light, the cai is great. if you want some real world gain in 2-3 hp while the vehicle is actually moving, then a a nice short ram with a good air filter element at the end will do.

Your Factory Air Box Is Sucking Air From The Same Place As A Cai, Just The Filter Is In The Compartment...which Is Still In An Inclosed Box, If U Took Out Ur Factory Box, U Would See All The Air Resivoirs And Tubes Where It Sucks Air From

A CAI does give you more power over a short ram....................on the dyno and at a stop light :grinyes: been proven by Doug @ hondata.


The only problem with those findings are, you cant effectively duplicate temperatures and conditions under the hood when your going down the highway.

you want more power at the stop light and on your dyno sheets (CAI) or when your car is moving the highway in real time (shortram)?

or get the best of both worlds like i did and get a comptech icebox.
