I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler SE with 4wd. The problem is when i put it in 4wd the indicator light does not light up, but the jeep feels like it is in 4wd. Can anyone help?

I have the same problem with my 2003 Sport. 4-Wheel drive is definitely working as we just got about 16 inches of snow yesterday and I used it regularly all day. I am assuming that there is a switch somewhere that is triggered when you pull the handle, but I am not sure. Hopefully, someone can help us both out with an answer.

I had a 85 cherokee that the light was controlled by a vacuum switch. Don't know if its the same with the newer ones or not but you might look for a kinked hose or something.

my 83 cj-7 has a hook up on the transfer case, so when it gets engaged in four wheel, the light will hook up. not sure if the newer ones run a simliar system or not but try looking around there to see if a vaccum line etc has been pulled off or if one is losing vaccum from old age.

The light is triggered by a switch in the front diff. It's located on the pass side of the diff. It's just a small switch that turns on the dash light when the diff is locked. I bet the bulb in the dash is out, or one of the two wires going to the diff switch are broken.

If your front axle has vacuum lines going to it, trace them out to the T-case. On the 91's there is a switch mounted on the DS top of the T-case that controlled the vacuum to the front axle. It might be bad, also trace your lines out, on the 91 I found that the plastic lines were cooked by the exhaust. Once I repaired the lines, all worked well. If you have the vacuum actuator, try using a vacuum line hooked to one of the two ports and see if it doesn't give you a light(engaging front axle) I did this as a temporary fix, it works and will help you T/S the system.

Hook the other end to a vacuum source to get your vacuum.
