stereo help in my 85

I just installed a new stereo deck in my 85, and the problem that I'm having is the RCA plugs hit the heater box, and keep the deck out about a 1/2" to far. I'm going to the big city tomorrow, and if I can find some 90.degree adaptors I'll try them, but I'm not holding my breath.

Without me taking the box right apart to see where the heater core is does any one know if I can drill a hole for clearance, or know of another soluton that will look good.

Thanks in advance

Are you using a install kit?I remember that those install kits were ugly because they stuck out like a 1/2 inch.

you have to have the old ugly kit, totally forgot about that, i had to use it in my 91 1500, yeah, look around for a kit, try like abc and tell them what you want to do and what you dont want, even if you dont buy from them they will usually help you out, otherwise yah, youll have to drill a holeand hope you dont hit ne thing importent

Thanks Folks

I kinda wish that my kit is one of those ugly stick out kits, then everything would fit... although like you said it would be ugly

I just got a flush fit kit from Radio shack, and they're the only kits available where I live.

I got some 90.degree cables today, and hope that they work. If they don't I'll probably get one of those converters that goes from normal speaker wires into an rca setup, although it would be a really mickeymouse setup then.

If that doesn't work out I'll have to shop on-line to find an old ugly install kit

I just don't like the idea of drilling a hole in my heater box, and knowing my luck it would be right through the core, or air conditioner.

I hope that you all have a good holiday

I feel your pain. I have an '85 also and clearance in the radio well is tight. I did not install any additional amps or CD changers so I simply had to deal with the threaded rear mounting stud on the stereo (just drilled a hole in the heater duct for it). Check out Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) for installation kits; they have an online tech help or you can call them directly. You may be stuck with using a kit that will cause the deck to stick out from the dash. 90 deg RCA adapters will help a bit, but your still not going to be able to snug in the radio flush with the dash opening. Cutting the heater ducting is a possiblility but you will have to fashion a patch to keep the HVAC from simply blowing out behind the dash into the radio area. No, you won't cut into the heater core; it lives down under in the passenger footwell area.

Good luck...

Mike
