pitted windshield

I really didn't notice this much until I washed the windshield with vinegar to remove petrol stains (overflying jets) and I wanted to apply 'Rainex' to make the water bead-up and run off while driving.

Whenever the light hits it just right - I can't see through my windshield due to minute 'pits' in the glass. I tried 'Rainex' thinking it would fill the pits like some of those eyeglass scratch repair kist do - but no luck.

Anyone got any ideas - short of replacing the glass?
