Have to remove the head on my e36. I have the vanos design head and am wondering if there is any specific direction for the removal and re installation of this advance device. I have taken a preliminary look at the gears and notice an arrow on the the gear attaching to the exhaust sproket, but I need to know more before I take it all apart. From what I have read, the single vanos in the e36 design is a simple device so I am sure it must be straight forward. Thanks!

I just worked on my E36 1995 325i cylinder head. I found A SITE call PELICAN PARTS which helped me a lot.

They also sell a lot of stuff including special tools for E36. You will need a cylinder head gasket set. Cylinder head bolts set , Crankcase lock and Lower belt tensioner.
I am in the proccess of putting everything back this coming weekend. I am so excited of what will be the result after I put it all back together.
Good Luck
