After 1968 there is nothing in the vin# to designate an SS car.
This might help you out:
First digit is 1 for Chevrolet Division
Second and third digits identify the series, should be 36 for Malibu V8
Fourth and fifth digits identify the body style, should be 37 for 2dr hardtop
Sixth digit is year, should be 0 for 1970
Seventh digit is a Letter, this is the plant, ie F= Flint, A= Atlanta
The last six are the production run numbers
Hope this helps

This should give you everything you need to know.
Sorry it took me a while to post this. Hopefully it's not too late.
Be sure to look at more than the VIN # to determine whether it's an SS or not. This page goes over some other #s to look for.
Good luck.

The site that DGB454 is good but the first sentence in the first paragraph is wrong. The 1970 was the second year that the "SS" package was an option without documentation. Further down the page they catch the mistake.
Here are a few things to look for.
3" heavy duty radiator, with four bolt top mount.
Extra brackets on rear suspension from the frame to the front mounting points of the control arms.
12 bolt rearend.
If the car still has the original upholstery you might get lucky and find the build sheet under the back seat.
If it's there look for RPO code Z25 = SS396 or Z15 = SS454
