I have a Golf TDI estate, 1997. On cold & frosty mornings the glow plug coil light does not come on unless the ignition switch is turned on & off for upto 10 mins. Once the light comes on the car starts normally. Alos on days when it is above freezing the light comes on first time. Does anyone know what the problem is? The relay appears to work.

The '97's were well known (& most had a recall) for bad "ignition" switches. Try jiggling the key back & forth in the on position to see if that makes contact for the glow system.

The car had a couple of other faults; rear window heater not working and rear window wiper would not self park. These were cured by repairing a damaged wire in the tail gate and since then the Glow Plugs have worked fine!
