WOOHOO! My first resin kit!

I just picked up a Studio27 BAR 006 (2004) on ebay, for 2/3s of the regular retail price!!! I can't believe my luck, it was perfect timing for me too!

Here's a link to some pics of the kit from the Studio 27 website...

For those of you who've built resin and white-metal kits before... can I just basically build it up in the same manner as a plastic kit?
Should I prime, sand, colour coat, decal clear coat? Or does the resin require special preparation before primer/paint?
Can resin be sanded the in the same manner as plastic?
What's the best type of glue to use?

Damn I'm happy!!!!!

Cheers all!
M

TG - not 2/3s "off", 2/3s "of", the regular price.

HLJ has it listed for US$161.12, I got it for US$117.50, which is actually about 70%.

I'm more than happy with 30% off!

Well done, what a steal!!

I've got the BAR006, but had to fork out the 100% price - that hurt!! The kit is brilliant though, Studio 27 are the Tamiya of the multi media kit world IMO.

When building resin/multi media kit, the build process involves a lot of sanding and preparation work (as you may have guessed from the flash, etc). When the preparation work is complete, it is best practice to scrub all the parts to wash off the mould release agents used. Also, a lot of test fitting is required to ensure a pefect fit.

In terms of paint, I use the normal automotive paint for the bodywork but there is nothing to stop you using Tamiya sprays or airbrushing. You can apply normal Tamiya acrylics for detail painting, but when I build them, I tend to undercoat the parts first with primer.

For glues, cyanoacrylate/superglue is what people tend to use. For a stronger bond, use 2 part epoxy resin. DO NOT USE POLYSTYRENE CEMENT, THIS WON'T DO ANYTHING EXCEPT MESS UP YOUR WORK!

Hope this helps.

...oh, which car are you going to build, Jenson Button's or Takuma Sato's?

I'm going to build Taku's car, as I am going to collect all the cars he has driven.

Is OOP. But I want the next version of BAR, heard that only 200 limited because they will be doing the Shanghai race 2005. It will have "555" rather than normal "Lucky Strike", my friend told me it will be selling fast so have to reserved fast too... :p

ES - Thanks for all the tips! I don't actually have the kit in my hands yet though, it's still in the mail. I just couldn't wait to post as I was pretty happy at the time.

Actually, with about 1 minute to go in the ebay auction I was about to lose the kit by a few dollars (Budget wouldn't stretch...). But my best friend poked her head round the corner, said Merry Christmas here's $20... and with a mad scramble to up my bid in the few remaining seconds... WOOHOO I won!

As for the driver, I think I'll go with Button, being his last drive with BAR. As much as I love Taku's driving, I think I'll wait for one of his future rides to build.

Let me know how your build goes also, I'm very interested in your input!

Rtuned - I didn't realise this kit was ALREADY out of production! I guess I got a better deal that I originally realised!

My friend told me about, then I ask him to order a piece for me. But what he told me ST27 had sold out. The only place can buy are those 2nd market like online shop. Next year, my money will drain out very fast... ST27 will be coming out Ferrari 512, it will be a DX kit(full engine and open hood) and the good thing is it is a road version. Ferrari fans would be very happy.

The 512 kits are shipping next Monday.
S27 stopped the 004 because they were making the 004 Japan/China version which started shipping a few weeks ago. There is no problem getting them currently but they do sell out fast so it is probably only a few weeks to a couple of months before they are gone for good.

How do you guys find out what new kits Studio27 will be making? I keep checking the Studio27 website gallery of kits, but it doesn't seem quite up to speed with what they actually have available. Do you simply keep an eye on the online stores?

Scaleracecars - do you mean the 006 kit, rather than the 004 kit?

Yes. I intended to say 006. I know because I am a dealer and get the information I need to order kits when they are ready to ship. I try to keep the website updated with the release dates.
