Ok, so I got my new subs. 2 10" MTX Thunder8000. I know that most of you here dont like them much, but I couldnt turn down 2 brand new 400w rms subs for 80$ shipped.

However, this setup will be the first time I am doing the install myself. The Install part is pretty easy, my only problem is designing the box, particularly to fit my trunk. So if any of you experts out there are bored and would like to help out a fellow member with designing a small box that would allow these to perform well, then please help.
Here is what MTX supplies for box size:

These will be going in a Mustang GT, so trunk is small. I also want something that would be easy to take out for racing/track days.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I wanted to do ported, but that involves "tuning the port" and I cant even design the basic box...

Haha, great clip of Tyrone Biggum, anyways, I have a friend who has 3 8000 12" subs running off the MTX 1501D amp, and it's pretty loud. I can't say that I can help you with demensions, but if all else fails talk to crossyouover at
http://www.caraudioforum.com/vbb3/forumdisplay.php?f=8
His name is Tim and he offered to make me a box dirt cheap, just for cost of supplies and shipping, and he knew what he was doing he's a real nice guy. If you want, pm me and I'll give you his number. However, I know a lot of people here like to build their own boxes, so, like I said, if all else fails, and you want a custom box without making it yourself or paying a shitload for a shop to do it, talk to him.

Yea but im thinking it will cost the shitload from a shop after he has to charge his price + ship the huge thing. I actually wouldnt mind getting it from him if the price was decent, and if you knew he did a good job. So go ahead and send me that # in PM.

hey high rev, do you think you'll be making only this box? or will you be making boxes all the time?
and more importantly.. do you have any of these...
circular saw
jigsaw
dremel
rotozip
lots of mdf
clamps
wood glue
liquid nails
measuring tape
????? because im in the process of making my own box, and i can tell u that financially, unless you have 1/2 or more of those materials it will not be worth it
(o yea also winisd, to help you out)
and this website...
http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=069893
you'll probably only need to read the..
"how to build a box"
"how to use winisd"
ok but from my experience.. the only things i had were...
dremel
circular saw
and without more materials at hand, you won't belive how frustrating it is.. (frustrating, but not hard to do, its really easy once you have all the tools)
ok i think total.. i spent enough to pay someone to make me a better box, just for buying materials that i dont have
clamps.. which help ALOT when you're nailing/glueing cost around $10-15 each, mdf cost $24 for 1 sheet, and for a ported box, you'll probably need 2 sheets
anyways if this is the only box you'll be building for a long time its better that you just tell someone to make one for you
why? because im about 75% done with my box, and it is NOT worth it, sure you learn how to make one but its just too much of a hassle

Haha cool I live in Chicago, I don't know if he'll remember my name(which is Kevin) but you can try it. Is there any nice shops in Elk Grove? ABT is real nice but crazy prized for custom installs but they are ranked in the top ten in the country for that type of stuff.

Yep.
Actually there is a place in Arlington Heights, (think it just moved into neightboring town w/e) that does customs and a pretty good job. They are called IL Audio. Most the kids I hang with got hooked up there, so i might go there....that way I can tackle my cd player in, my subs in, and my windows tinted at once. (Id do the cd player but the connection for it to a Ford Mach Audio system is like 50$, so i figure if I get all this done at once, he will give me a good deal, and I wont need to worry about finding the connection)

hey high rev, do you think you'll be making only this box? or will you be making boxes all the time?
I kinda already have plans for the box, but I might goto the audio place mentioned above.
At my local home depot, they told me they would cut everything, but the circles for the subs. My buddy has a jigsaw to handle that. So at that point we would have all of the pieces cut. I dont know what most of your supplies are but I can say this:
I would have the MDF cut.
Following my guide (IN-Car Electronics by Haynes) I would need wood glue for in between connections (have), and screws every 4 inches (have) from pre-drilled holes (can do). Once the box is held together, and before adding the front piece, I would need to use silicone sealent along the inside of the connections (have). Then use spray adhesive (can get) to hold on the Carpeting, followed by HD Staples in less conspicutous (Sp?) Areas....Once the carpet is on let dry for 24 hours, Put subs in.. and voila!
Maybe they make it sound easier than it is, but couldnt I get away with building it that way? Why/Why not?
Also My buddy is planning on paying me to install his subs. I told him I cant do boxes, so he was going to buy one, but I figure if I do my own, maybe I can hook him up with a box too.
