I have a 1993 Ford Escort GT with the *exact* same problem. Plenty of cranking action, but it just won't start. The radio and headlights work just fine, but when attempting to start none of the indicator lamps are lit. (Check Engine, Oil, Low Fuel, Brake, etc.) Usually they all light up when I crank the starter. Here's what I've done so far:

Checked each and every fuse, both under the dash and under the hood.
Checked the Fuel Shut-off switch. (located behind panel in trunk)
Tried starting with choke. (accelerator to the floor when cranking)

You've probably already tried that, am I right vsm?

Could it be my spark plugs? Or worse, the driving computer which tells them when to fire?

Anyone have a solution to our seemingly identical problems?

By the way vsm, what "module" did you replace?

The CPU could be the problem but I don't think so, If it were the CPU it more than likly will start but will not manage it self so it miss fires and has no power. I would shoot in the dark one more time and change the cam sensor it's about 20 bucks or so then try the coil packs. If you want to check the engine for fire pull one of your plug wires from the coil pack and leave it lieing in the female part just enough for the terminal to be close to the coil have some one to turn the engine over if it fires you should see it(do not touch while fireing) if you have fire then it could be fuel problem. Just a thought GOOD LUCK

My escort is having the same problem but I think it has something to do with a relay because I have no spark and my fuel pump is not getting power a good signs of of a relay problem but everthing else works like lights ,radio etc. just finding a good wiring diagram is the prolem.

PROBLEM FOUND! Thankfully its none of the above, the problem is my ignition switch. After turning the key and not seeing the normal indicator/warning lights come on I wiggled it a bit and everything came on. The car started fine and it hasn't given me any trouble in the last 2 days. It is still an intermittent problem however, and it may get worse... anyone know a good place online to order a replacement ignition switch for a 1993 Escort GT? Is it a difficult procedure, or should I hire a mechanic?

Thanks for all the help, hope this info helps someone else.
