Exhaust

Well, I've been eyeing these 2 exhausts for a long time, and now that I've got an exhaust leak (at least one) it's about time I got one. I'm looking for tone mainly, and preferably one that's quiet cruising but loud when I open it up. General consensus seems to be that they're about equal performance wise. I can get both in the 200-225 range (w/o tips for the rumbler tho... eh no biggie), just still can't decide which one.

Something didn't look right so I double checked, Magnaflow I can get for $350 for the v6 model or if I wanna go 3" tubing the Z28 model is $320

I see the votes, but any relies? I'll be getting this sooner than I thoguht, my muffler is shot as of today

OK well I've decided it on the Magnaflow. Now my question is, the v6 model that is 2.5" that I can get for $350, of the v8 model that is 3" that I can get for $320??? If I go with the 3" will it kill power or sound worse of anything?

the three inch will increase the flow and ( i think ) give it a deeper sound

Any other opinions? will 3" make me lose torque, or sound worse?

You were on the right track with the 2.5, you definitely won't want 3". You are exactly right about the loss of low-end torque. I am not sure about the ricey sound as most all 6's(no offense) will sound ricey in the higher RPM range. :2cents:

i'm not doing headers tho; i'll still lose tq?? i used to hear about the loss of torque... now of all the poeple i asked you're the first one to say yes... haha, i wish i had like dyno graphs or something to see for sure :/

I am obviously not going to promise a loss of torque, but it is a very common thing when oversizing pipes. I haven't seen this info from dyno graphs either, just a watch and learn kind of deal. People don't realize that dual 3" pipes will not do any good to motors except the most powerful big blocks. In my personal opinion, 2.5 in pipes are going to lose torque, and gain little hp. 2" pipes would be more like it, but that isn't as cool(therefore it isn't often done). It is all about backpressure, and as you don't want too much, you do need some for exhaust scavenging. In the lower RPM range a motor cannot take advantage of 3" pipes, and doesn't have enough backpressure for proper scavenging. This is the same reason that zoomy headers are not practical, or even a power adder, they just look cool.Only in the high RPM range is it possible for an engine to take full advantage of 3" pipes. I doubt that you would be using that RPM range very often, so I suggest 2.5 or smaller pipes. The same principle goes for not running mufflers, and running mufflers. Your motor is just screaming "More backpressure please!". Motors overwork and bog down with insufficient backpressure. I am only 15, so take what you want of this. There is a backpressure expert lurking around here somewhere, and he could help you much more than I can. :2cents:

damn rod&custom, for a 15 year old you know your shit. just givin props where they are due.

that being said, with just a catback system, especially one with a catalytic converter, the difference between the 2.5 and 3in system will be negligable. for your sixer, the 2.5 will probly be better matched, also we arent talking duals, so i wouldnt get a 2.0in system, that would be too small. also keep in mind, are you planning on running any power adders in the future, say a turbo, or supercharger, if so, the 3in system my come in handy. as for the sound, thats decided primarily by the muffler not the pipes, although they do have an impact on tone. The only 3in system i have heard on a sixer is a flowmaster american thunder, and it sounded horrible. but on my V8, it sounds awesome, so take that as you will.

Thanks alot! I guess I should've read the original post a little better. Apparently he is deciding on a single pipe cat-back system? Wow, and too think that I suggested 2"... :shakehead Listen to 89iroc, a 3" pipe wouldn't be far off, if any, and especially nice with mods. Sorry 'bout the mixup, and thanks for the kind words!

yup, all I can run is the single pipe... well its possible to run true duals but for me, definately not worth it. I'm going with teh 3" since its 30 bucks cheaper for me. Also getting a high-flow cat... I guess I'll be getting 3" in/out and i have to get some type of adaptor to have the stock y-pipe into the cat, not too cure on that one tho.

check out catco, the converter i got from them was a stock replacement, complete with factory style bracket. doing it with a general purpose converter would have been a pain in the ass, this one was one of the easiest parts of my exhaust upgrades.

I'm not saying u have to buy this but look into the bassani exhaust sytem thats what I got on my Camaro IROC Z 1988 and it sounds great it has great cruising and of course racing tone. It's and loud tone my friends at scholl love and I race my frined alot he has a 69 Camaro Z28 and I smoke him every time. The draw back is that the Bassani cost around $800 don't make ur decision yet just look into it. Mine I believe has 3" inch pipes.

Please don't post in old threads. If you notice, the last post before yours has a date stamped on the bottom left that reads "01-10-2005, 01:07 AM." This thread is 6 months old. We try to keep old threads dead, that way only the recent and newer threads are at the top of the list. Thanks.
