i believe my fluid may have run low, and the chain has stretched. where can i get a rebuild kit for my transfer case? does anyone recommend upgrading to a beefier case? i have the 5-sp tranny, and the case is either a np231 or 242, haven't checked that yet. thanks-

it is a " 231j" it does not have the np tag on it, with the outer border in red. can i put a different case in this jeep?

the chains strech normally they need to be replaced every 150,000 miles or so. That is the most common t-case for cherokees and farly reliable. there are tons of aftermarket mods for them. if you wanted to upgrade to the stronger NP242 you would need to regear your front end, and get the aproprate linkage to replace the exsisting one.

BS you don't have to regear the front end if you want the 242. I love my 231 and have hammered the crap out of it with 36" Swamper SX's and it works great.

looks like i caught it in time before it began chewing a hole in the case. replaced chain and seals, works like a dream!!

also when you switch from a 231 t case, to a 242 the rear driveshaft needs to be longer, so find a driveshaft off a jeep with a 242 t case, and put that in, that and the linkage are the only to differences
