I have a 96 3/4 ton with the 5.7 Vortec...
Last night I started it after sitting for about a day, and the service
engine soon light came on right after starting it. It was about 0 degrees fahrenheit outside.
I got to work this morning, light still on, and I disconnected the neg battery cable for about a half hour, reconnected it, and I started it up.
The light was STILL on. Truck sat all day at work, got in it tonight to come home, light OFF!!
My question is, why would it go out by itself?
I thought sure I had a bad 02 sensor or something...
Now I dont know what to think.
I am thinking it had something to do with the cold weather??.....

If there is still a problem, the light will come back on. Then you should definatly have it scanned. I think autozone will do it for free.

I am fairly sure it was a misfire, but not certain.
Like I said, the light went out by itself, so whatever problem
was there must be gone now.
I hope the light dont come back on...
