Some kid a my school just got a stock 1998 ta. he thinks he is the junk and wants to race me. i have a 1996 ta ws6 with slp loudmouth. we both have automatics. who would win?

diff between an lt1 and a ls1 is roughly 20 horse. You have exhaust and ram air, he doesn't, so the HP should be very close. Doesn't come down to the driver cuz both are auto. Traction control might be more of an issue. Its a toss up i think, not possible to really know who is gonna win. I would like to see the lt1 win, but im biased.

I bet it'll come down to driver. Weight, reaction time, etc.

heres what you do.. before take off put your left on the brake.. right on the gas and get to about 2500 rpm right before you let off n it will give you a better launch.. and with the low end torque in the LT1 you'll beat him.. it'll be close, but you should beat him. especially if you have an exhaust and ram air setup.. because that actually will give you a little bit of a hp advantage over him..

if you shift by hand and let it rev to 6k on every gear, you can beat him.just practice hand shifting, and hope that when you race he doent go for the shifter.Cause hes got more power than you.

hand shifting a computer controlled automaitc is like watering the grass in the rain. Just put it in drive and go...

Besides, stock chipset won't let the car hit 6k with out bumping the rev limiter

Hmm.seemed to help on the ones ive driven.Seems like they shift to second around 5200 in drive, but you can get them to run a steady 6 if you put it in first and hold it to the floor....Thats what i gathered while driving a 98',cause thats exactly what it did.

My '94 limited before 6K, I don't know what they changed by '96 though...

take out a personal loan for 5k and get an LT4 conversion and a Supercharger.. then his car wont lick the dirt off your tires..

i was thinking about some hooker long tubes and the off road y-pipe but i decided to save my money for a street bike for college.

You can pick up a decent bike for around 2K...that leaves 3K... :-)

You didn't have a chance before.

The two cars would have been pretty even until about 45-55 MPH, then the LS1 car would have started pulling you pretty good.

The stock 1998 LS1 car would have made 300 or so RWHP, and you would have made like 265. Torque would have been really close, with him edging you out by a little bit. That is why you would hang with him down low.
You probably could have given him a decent scare though!

I'm afraid I have to agree the LS1 will win but it will not be a killing. Do you both have the same gears?. Cause if one of you have 2.73's and the other has the 3.23's that will create a pretty big advantage.
