Not sure where this is coming from, but at 3500 RPM it sounds like a bunch of loose plastic vibrating from the engine compartment until I get above 4K RPM. New head job by a reputable machine shop, can't say if the noise was there before then as my son was driving it. Exhaust seems tight. Can't find where it's coming from, but it's going to drive me crazy if I don't junk it first!

check the plastic fan shroud first. Make sure that there arent any marks fron the fan hitting it, and if you give up on it try selling it to your son for a summers worth of chores

I don't remember seeing anything there, but I'll double cheek. It also brings to mind that there may be a missing rubber shock pad missing somewhere. I'll check it out tonight. Thanks for the tip.... as for selling it to the son for a summer of chores--- I'll never get that pink slip paid off from him!! (lol)

You pointed me in a different direction with that one. It lead me to check the transmission fluid (along with a bunch of other stuff). I was planning on going under the truck for a closer look on the weekend when I had better light. Here's what I did find:
1. Transmission fluid level low
2. Fluid has a brown color to it!
I think that this may be where I'm headed.... The transmission shop!! I'll be sure they take a look at the U joints as well. Thanks for the tip.
