Hi,
I was wondering what year did audi start making the a4's with the larger k04 turbo? Is a swap from a k03 to a k04 worthwile. i heard that the car will run fine even if you swap the turbos and dont get a chip. Is this true??????????
Also, this guy on ebay is selling a whole turbo kit T3/T4 for the 1.8T audi engine. Would the rest of the stock engine handle a swap like this(pistons etc)???
I have a 97 1.8T Q.

Thanks

ko4 was never in any a4's.. the 01's had the k03 'sport' which is close.. ko4 can runo n stock programming...just not ideal..
as far as the t3/t4.. then engine can handle it... but.. no one makes programming for that setup... as far as i know..and its worthless w/o programming..
if you want a big turbo.. go gt28 or t28..

does the k03 sport only come on the newer shape a4's or does it also come on the older style a4's. I was wanting to purchase a 2000 model older style a4 but am not sure what turbo it has. what boost does the ko3 sport run on stock, and and how much more will it give me with a chip?

the k04 does fit.. i dont think the tt k04's will fit b/c they're for a transversely mtd. engine and tthe in.et/outlet is on the wrong side.. but that doesnt really matter..k04's are readily available...they just dont come stock on a4's..that's all.
i believe only the 01'sd had the k03 sport.. putting out 180hp.. probably like 210 with a chip..

No, the tt has a different shape turbo inlet, it wouldn't fit, im looking to purchase a k04 but i was told that it would blow the head gasket and the pistons wouldnt handle it. i was also told by a guy at oeteenger? tuning that with the k04 a chip and a fuel pressure regulator is all i need for the swap, and that after the mod, the car will be running around 245hp, with 19-20psi constant, and under high boost, 26psi. Is this an amount that is able to be handeled by a stock 1.8T Q? The only other mods i have are a Go Fast Bits BOV and a 2.5 inch exhause from the turbo.

haha.. a k04 is not gonna make you blow your head gasket.. the bottom end of the 1.8t is practically bullet proof and a k04 is nothing.... there are no problems running that kind of horsepower.. there are 400hp 1.8t's on stock bottom ends..
you do need a few more things than that.. take a look at www.awetuning.com ..they're having a winter sale and complete k04 kits are cheap.

eh.. not much really.. i mean it works.. but its kind of a waste..
it'd be more beneficial and cheaper to just chip your k03

after the turbo and chip upgrade, with a 1/4mile time of around 14.5 seconds, what would be the next best thing to do to get the times in the 13sec region? I forgot to mention that i have a front mount intercooler.

hmmm not much really with the k04... if you want 13s.. i say skip the k04 and get a t28 kit or gt28rs kit... t28 can get you in the low 13s...lemme find a quarter mile chart..

00 and up are drive by wire and can use the x chip.. non dbw cannot...

Well idk if it is ture about blowing you bottom end but if you are worried you could probaly buy low compression pistons. Also i head that bov cause to many code errors i heard that a diverter valve would give more preformance than a bov and you would still get that nice sound with out any code errors

How does the blow off valve cause code errors. Is it because of the instant loss of pressure every time you let off the gas that triggers a problem with a sensor that probaly monitors and controls pressure in the turbo?

well idk reeally but what i would sya what does it is liek you said
a bov let out all the pressure into the air whic will make you lose bost and will make you lose pressure and a diverter valve will take the boost from the turbo and then put it back into the manafold thus keeping the boost and not making you lose power and making less turbo lag

its b/c our cars use MAF's to meter the air.. a bov vents to the atmosphere and that missing air causes the car to run rich b/c fuel is getting supplied for that air.. a dv dumps back into the intake tract..

Ive asked alot of people and most have said that they dont believe in a boost controller for this car, why???? Also would a stiffer clutch and pulley kit be a wise choice? Ive heard of DBW but what exactly is it?

my bov vents some air back in to eliminate any problems. ive also bought a FMIC but havent mounted it yet because i need to organise piping and endtanks, but im having second thoughts as most results ive seen with and w/o a FMIC are similar, as the rest of the cooler would be expensive, do you think it would be advisable to go through with it?

mbc's will throw the car into limp mode... many have tried...but they never work out...
dbw is drive by wire.. there is no direct mechanical connection between the gas pedal and the tb.. its all electronic..
definitely run the fmic if you're going with a turbo upgrade... it may not make any dif in a dyno run...but if you're planning on tracking your car...the difference will be there.. or even multiple quarter mile runs.

my cooler is 15cm high, 600cm long, and 5.5cm thick, i could ditch it and go with a 600 long, 30 high, and 7.5 thick, but am worried that itwill be too big?????????????????

..stick with the small for now.less trimming and less pressure drop...
