Help I've got a 4WD problem

It will only stay in Part-time. I can't get it to go back to 2WD or get it to go into 4WD. I drove it for a few weeks in 4wd but I didn't think there would be any problem.
I also just got new tires, same tread but new back tires on the car.
Any thoughts?

Could use more info what year is your Jeep? Sounds like you have a 242 Transfer case with Full_Part_2WD. It could be your linkage, the best way is to jack up the Jeep using jack stands on all4 wheels. Have some one move the 4wd lever and see if it engages in all the modes. Start the jeep make sure you have all 4 wheels off the Ground! secured with jack stands. Put in drive and check if it is going in and out of 4wd. Might want to check the fluid level in the Transfer case.

It's a 94, jeep cherokee. Transfer Case? Fluid Level?
Where's the transfer case? I have to find the owners manual! The jeep was given to me and I know nothing about 4wd! What a newbie I am.
Would the oil have anything to do with it? I was low recently.

you may want to try putting the trans in neutral or even rolling a bit while you try to shift it back to 2wd. If you dont' want to get dirty, bring the jeep to a quick lube place , they could check the transfer case fluid. You have to remove the fill plug under the vehicle to check it. I also agree with the linkage, needs to be checked and or adjusted.

Didn't you say you put on new tires, then later you said "on the back". Does that mean you only put them on the back? If so, you're no doubt putting the transfer case in a bind.
Like 89ltd says, put it in rev or neutral and roll it back and play with it until it comes out. Go ahead with the linkage check, but I'd get the new tires for the front too...
