I got a newly acquired 89 4.0 6 cylinder jeep cherokee. It has 212,000 miles on it, and truthfully runs very very good. First off the car has to warm up a good 5 minutes before take off or it will stall, thats acceptable. The engine even has slight rattling, acceptable. Whats not acceptable is the fact that when im going up hills, i barely have power! And if i try to gun it, the engine feels like its pulling back making the car shake noticeable (more noticeable in the lower 3rd gear). I DID change the cap and rotor, but i havent chagned the plugs. I do remember the guy telling me there was a slight crack on the plugs he put in because he made a mistake.....If not that then what else? Also, there is a slight bogging down of the acceleration when you first push down the pedal.

First check the plugs and wires. If no change check the fuel pressure should be around 31 lbs. Also clean the throttle body check the air cleaner, pcv valve. If condition still persists do a compression check.

Thinking you should check your egr valve and egr solenoid. Check out thttp://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Engine/Basic_Sensors_Diagnostics.htmhis link before spending $:

While there's nothing wrong with letting it warm up before driving, it shouldn't stall. Check out what Cam and Ironic posted.
I have an '88 with about 160k. I can take off immediately if needed. No stall, no hesitation. You should too.

I have an 88 with over 250k, the only thing wrong with it right now is the transfer case. It is one of the best vehicles that i have ever owned.

EGR valve is making it bog down I bet I have fixed 8 XJ's this way. locate the EGR on the driver side of the engine on the side of the intake manifold, its a little metal thing mounted to the side of it you cant miss it. Just unplug the vaccume hose from the top of it and take it for a test if problem solved there you go. Mine has been disconnected for two years now and no problems.
