well, i am having a hard time here, i used the search but only got myself confused even more, ok so here it goes, tamiya sprays are acrylic right? well i read something on this forum that said acrylics arent that great for large surfaces, but people use them for painting car bodies all of the time, so what i wanna know is that, is tamiya spray paints good for painting car bodies? or should i just stick with duplicolor like i always have been using? thenks vary much to who ever reads/answers this!

tamiya spray paints with ts on them are lacquers and the acrylics are in the little bottles.

Tamiya sprays are lacquer and great for car bodies. Dupli-color is also a lacquer and both can be used together. Tamiya is a little thinner and you get better results but not as many colors. Tamiya Acrylics come in jars and are used with an airbrush or brush but work fine for bodies as well.

Tamiya's TS sprays are synthetic lacquer based acrylic paint. The way paints are classified is somewhat different in Japan and US.

In US, paints that are available at "hobby stores" are either Enamel or Acrylics, and acrylics almost always mean water soluble.

The Japanese brands go by the types of solution like water, enamel, and lacquer. Enamel paints are pretty much long gone, except for the Tamiya's tiny bottles for brush application. Because of that, almost all Japanese paints are acrylics, and they can be either water soluble (like the bottled Tamiya Acrylics, and Gunze's Mr. Aqueous Hobby Color), lacquer (like TS and Gunze sprays, as well as Mr. Color.) or 2-part urethane, which isn't so common.

I go by the Japanese way when I talk to those who're using the Japanese brands, but I also refer to the US classification when talking to those who've never used the Japanese paints.

another alternative for ts spray can is gunze laquer paint. but u need an airbrush to spray it with...
i switch from tamiya ts paint to this cos it cost cheaper and very economical...

Testor Spraycan are Enamel
Bottle are Enamel too (but also have special acrylic line)

BTW, Tamiya bottle are acrylic, but can't be thinned with water. it's Alcohol based.

I have found that each person has his/her own prefferences. I personally like to use model master/boyd paints and stay in the enamel breed of paints. I do like the efficiency of laquer and acrylic paints in their drying time. I just get better results from enamels. I have used the tamiya spray and have had superb results, I just like using my airbrush, as I use less paint (less over spray).

try all you can and get a feel for all of them. you will soon have a favorite, and you will stick to it. then everyone will be astounded, and ask "How did you get such a smooth paint job with that kind of paint?"

good luck

I'll take TS laquer pints sprayed through an airbrush. You can get the quality of TS sparay cans and use way less paint... especially on the 1:43 cars I do. Cans spray way to much paint and don't have the control. They're fine for 1:24 and up though...

I find TS paints excellent to use. They have great coverage and my GT-R I just completed didn't even need a polish after using TS Black. It's just a pity the cans are so small :)

I mostly use Tamiya spraycans (TS) rather than enamel or alcohol/water thinned acrylics. Keep in mind real cars are sprayed w/ lacquer. Testors also has a new line of automotive lacquer paint, those are very nice too w/ an airbrush.

Well, actually they CAN be thinned with plain old h2o (mainly because IPA and water do mix). I use a combination of IPA, h2o and Kodak "wetting solution" when thinning semi/satin and flat Tamiy acrylics and the Tamiya thinner when thinning glosses.

Just goes to show ya how different everyone's experiences can be!!

I LOVE the cheap "windex" for cleaning my airbrush and jars after using acrylic paints, but it always affected the color when I tried to use it as a thinner..yellow was tinted green, red was tinted purple, black was tinted blue...etc.

1 model, 1 million different ways to build it!
