Sound Dragging? Anyone heard of it!?!?!

So i have heard about this thing from my cousin where you take a car and put a huge sound system in it... like the whole car is packed. You place a decible reader in the car and start the car (you have to get an automatic start otherwise it can kill you supposedly??? *not sure about this at all*) then you blast the sound as loud as possible... apparently they are getting up into the 700 decible range (which is insane cause at 95 decibles your brain explodes) but yea... i know nothing about this does any oneelse know?

Also... are there people from houston, texas in here?

your brain does not explode at 95 decibles

Noise can harm humans. Loud and unpleasant sounds can damage your hearing. Noise pollution can cause hearing loss, pain, and stress. Noise is unwanted sounds. Any decibel reading at 85 dBs or above can damage hearing. Noise regulation laws exist to protect workers and should be followed in homes to protect humans, pets, and other wildlife from damage to their physical and social well-being. Builders can use insulated walls and acoustical ceilings to reduce sounds. they can seal cracks located on the inside and outside of buildings to reduce noise from the outside. Special window panes, drapes, carpets, and thicker doors will also keep unwanted sounds out.http://www.bucconeer.worldcon.org/contest/2002e_f2.htm

ha... it atleast harms you... soo yea

hitting in the 700db range.....95db killing you......this is a classic

yes there are dB drags, I wasn't aware of anyone into audio who DIDN'T know about it. But anyway, the highest possible dB level in our atmosphere is around 195, the top competitors are in the high 170's right now, 150 is enough to stop your heart, 140 causes pain in your ears, and most decent systems are around 130.

So my heart should be stoped??? I think it would take mid 160's to so that because I've been in several cars the are doing mid 150's. One of them was a daily and I would ride around in it all the time with no problems other then the fact I couldn't hear when I got out and my ears would ring for a day afterwards.

PaulD

wow .... 700 dB on a logrithmic scale, that's truly unfathomable. The 85 dB stuff is "A" weighted ... means basically no bass. Car stereo comps use no weighting, so you are mostly measuring bass output

AndonD454
12-19-2004, 06:44 PM
haha i was thinkin about that.. if 95 db made your brain explode.. then what would it take to produce and retain 700 db inside of a car.. i know its not possible to get that loud.. but still im gonna put about 70 solo X 18s, and like 70 5 killowatt amps and put them im an enourmous semi trailer that is covered in titanium and see what i can do (haha dont check my figures i just threw them out there im playin)

it all depends on the frequency being played and the person in question, but from what I hear, the pressures generated at 150+dB can screw up your nervous system enough to stop your heart. It probably wouldn't happen to a healthy person though, because like you, I know people who have been in 150dB cars and not had a problem with their heart.

just out of curiosity.. the thing that first made me get into car audio.. it was like 4 years ago but i was at a custom car show.. and a guy had like 6 jl audio 10s (didnt know what model of course i was totally ignorant..) but they were in a blazer and i remember i stuck my head in the drivers side windows and i immediately got really dizzy and my eyes started watering like hell. about what db does it take for this?

sr20de4evr
12-19-2004, 06:59 PM
140's probably, my brahma can do that if I decide to turn it up, but I only do that when friends want to hear the "system", and by "system" they really mean the sub and nothing else.

there are a lot of things you can do to make it better, it just depends on what specifically you feel is lacking and how much money you're willing to throw at it ;)

AndonD454
12-20-2004, 01:54 AM
well we can help you out but we will probably need to knwo:
..what kinda of car you have
..any changes youve made from the stock stereo, if any
..how much money you think youd be willing to spend on your stereo
..what you want upgraded (whether you just want louder, or better sound quality, more bass, etc.)
.. maybe what kind of music you listen to
.. um anything else you think would help.. cant think of anything else for now but that will give us a good start

i have a 2002 Jeep liberty
As far as sound, i want better quality and maybe a little louder.. i havent made any changes to what came in the car... about the money... well that doesnt really matter cause i have got plenty to spend... lol... i listen to alllllllll music... but right now i am really into hip-hop and country (although classic rock is my first love)... ummmmm yea cant think of anything else! oh (off subject) i am getting an underglow (yay! i know some people think they are cheesy but i think they are awesome)

sr20de4evr

hehe, there's always a maximum budget, if it's not what you can spend, it's what you're willing to spend. Just to give some ideas....these are the prices that I think you need to spend to get different levels

simple sub and amp - $3-400
cheap complete system - $800
medium system - $1300
good system - $2000
very good system - $2500
cheap competition level - $3000
and true competition level can go from ~$3500 to $20000 or more

These are with balanced budgets for the front stage and substage and processing, if you care more about bass then it might cost a bit more to get those "levels" that I laid out.

If you tell us about what you're looking to spend then we can go from there

sr20, you thought about putting another 2.2 on the tweets ?

sr20de4evr

well that's a lot of money and power just for some tweets, I did think about a dps200 for them though, but unfortunately LP closed its doors, so I ordered an arc 2050 xxk for them instead. But with my luck it's taking an eternity to ship because it was special order....lame

Hes selling it for $45k if anyone is interested or wants to loan me some money let me know... :)

yeah, it's pretty depressing

they said they're still going to cover warranty work, but they've been in the business so long that the owners just decided to call it quits :(

What I wanna know is, Who told you that 95 db will make your brain explode?! I bet they got a hell of a good laugh when they saw your face when you believed them. (after you left at least) I know I would have laughed my ass off if somebody believed that.. brain explodes, lol.. oh well, how were you supposed to know? another thing, about the atmosphere and 190 being the highest possible db... is that to say that nothing on earth can be louder than 190 db? I wanna get an RTA bus and load it with W7s, and see if I can hit 700! lol. I think everybodys brain within a mile would explode!

another thing, about the atmosphere and 190 being the highest possible db... is that to say that nothing on earth can be louder than 190 db?

that's right, without loading everything into a special hyperbaric chamber, or changing the medium (say, underwater), it is impossible to create a sound louder than ~195dB on earth.

Im away for 9 days and a post like this happens. Wow. Well everyone in here has pretty much covered it. except the liquidation of your shitter.

95dB can easily be hit by your average OEM stereo.
700dB would make Uranium reach critical mass and...well you get the idea.
As far as i know the loudest sound ever recorded (dont ask me how) initiated by humans was something like 204 dB. Back in the days when they did nuclear testing out in arizona and texas. blowing cavities 1/8miles in diameter under the ground and liquidating the surface for a few seconds. Now i know 3 people with skin cancer in florida because of the jet stream taking many of the alpha and beta particles over here and droping htem off or some BS.
130dB is the average threas hold of pain in non bass frequincies.
140dB for bass frequincies
Higher frequincies played over 150dB are known to make some peoples (especialy small people) hearts fribulate (i know i know Sp)
over 155 near the lowest E flat (somewhere in the 30's frequincy range, im not sure of the frequincy) will releive constipation and over 160 should give your the runs. (soutpark wasnt lieing about the brown noise. it just has to be played extremely loud)
170 will pound your ear drums out with out protection. permanit hearing loss.
mid 160's has been known to cause blood coagulation, how i dont know.
you cna experence it and survive. but all the docters BS their recomendations and all dB drag competitions do not alow your in the car (who would want to any way) in any major SPL class.

well anyway i had a wonderful time in the carribian. st. marteen is a beautiful island. and well jamaca is great....lol
