My '97 Taurus has been having problem of not able to start (cranks but not turning over) intermittenly. I decided to replace both CAM shaft and crankshaft position sensors. Well. replacing CMP was a breeze on this engine. It took less that 20 minutes. However, I'm having trouble replacing the CKP. After unbolting the sensor from lower engine housing, I could not take it all the way out. It was blocked by a piece of metal part. I looked at Chilton manual and it didn't mention anything about removing parts in order to take out CKP. I'm really dubiuos about removing that big piece of metal part just to get CKP out. If anyone has done this before on this particular engine, please shed some light on how to approach this. thanks.

Check this out, it's very detailed. Only thing it's for a SHO with the Yamaha motor. Should be the same general procedure though.http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0&sid=72
