97 escort wierd clicking

about a month ago my sister's 97 escort wouldnt start. figured easy fix change the starter and battery. well it started once and wont start again just keep getting this wierd clicking noise from under the air filter. kinda looks like a small ECU. can anybody tell me what that is and what it does?
any suggestions on what it might be or what i need to look into?

There is nothing under the air cleaner except the intake silencer box. I think your solenoid is clicking. Did you replace it when you replaced the starter? If the solenoid clicks either the battery is discharged, the wiring to the starter and solenoid is not making good contact or your engine is seized. If you have a volt meter check the battery. It should have at least 12.6 volts. Check your lights to see if they are dim. To check the ignition switch and clutch switch run a jumper lead from the + battery cable to the small terminal on the solenoid marked S. If it cranks you have wiring problems.

does that intake silencer box have wires running to it? my does and it clicks even after i turn the ignition off.

I just took a look at my 97 and your right. There is some kind of junction box under the air cleaner. I checked the starting and charging electrical diagrams and none of the colors of wires that go into that box have anything to do with the starting and charging circuits. It's got me baffled too. Sorry I couldn't do you any good.

i was looking in the haynes book and i think i narrowed it down to what the book calls the EDIS
