Fueling Slowly?

We just got a 2004 Avalanche last month. Everything is great except for one thing. It takes forever to fuel. Something seems to be wrong. Has anyone experienced this and is there a quick fix for it or does it need to go to the shop?

I do not know about the gas stations in the U.S. if that is where you are from , but i know here in Canada they have shutoff's that if it senses and back pressure at the nozzle like when the tank is getting full it kicks off. If the pumps in the U.S. are like that as well then i do not think it is a problem with your truck, it may be just that where you get fuel that the pumps are slow. I know when i get fuel here at different stations sometimes it takes alot longer than other places for the same amount of fuel. Also if the pumps in the U.S. have the same type of shut off and if it is a problem with your trucks fuel filler neck, i would think it would cause fuel to back up in the filler neck and kick off the pump like as if it were getting full. Just a thought..........i could be wrong. Maybe try fueling up at a differnet station next time.....

Thanks for your reply Kenny. That's not the problem though. We have pumped at this station for years with all of our cars and don't have any problems. We also have a Surburban at don't have this issue at all at the same gas station and we have this problem with the Avalanche at every station and pump. It's definitely something with the car.

Heard of this before, maybe a Trailblazer though, but the dealers have a fix for it from what I read. Be worth a phone call to the service dept for sure.

One thing that works on my truck (won't fill at all otherwise) is to pull the nozle out to where it's barely inside the neck. Be ready to stop it when it's getting full, or you'll spill a bit. You can hear the difference in sound when it's getting close.

OK, I have an 04 that does this too, until I figured out that it is a fluid dynamics thing. The curve of the inlet pipe makes the fuel back up into the tube.
twist the nozzel handle to the left, hard against the fuel door. This puts the nozzel in a right hand point in the tube. It swirls the fuel in the right direction to take it fast.
It works every time for me.

One thing on these trucks, they vent through the evap system if you have the key on or engine running whilen refueling the vent is closed and will cause the slow fuel fill.

I've got a 2004 Avalanche and have experienced the same problem. Engine is always off. Various different gas stations. Hot or cold engine. Hve tried tipping the handle left, right, upside down, etc. Just got it back from the dealer for the 2nd time and they claimed they couldn't duplicate (it is somewhat intermittent). Took it immediately across the street to the gas station and it had the problem. Had the service tech come over to experience it first hand. "Gee, I don't know. We'll have to look into it and let you know"
