A 97 LS1 pushes 300 HP in a 5.7L v8. 340ish with CAI, headers, and exhaust I've seen these stock on ebay for 5k.
The SC's can boost power by 65% at about 9PSI and are relatively cheap, i've seen them for under $3,800.
So for under 10k, I can have a car pushing upwards of 560 HP at the crank?
Why haven't I seen anyone running these? Why is it always stangs and imports that everyone always talks about and owns?

The hp#s of the LS1s are actually underrated by GM. They actually have about 340-350hp at the flywheel stock. But yeah they can produce some nice #s for not a whole lot of money although the rearend wouldn't be able to hold up for long.

a 97 isnt a ls1, its a lt1, the ls1 was in the vettes that year. then from 98-02 was ls1/ls6

its true that the 97 isnt an ls1 in an fbody but he never went that far as to say he has an fbody, or was even reffering to an fbody he is just on the fbody site.
the reason you dont see alot of this is because there is alot of other work that needs to be done to the car for it to be able to handle that power. most people are content with just the boltons.
sc's usually gain you about 40% not 60%
you could also do the same if not more with nitrous and do it alot cheaper.
there are lots of diff ways to make lots of power in a sbc. i will have close to 450 whp with just heads and cam.
the problem with fords and imports is they dont make much power unless they are forced induction. if you look at a 97 mustang with upper and lower intake heads cam and all the boltons, they make about as much power at an lt1 with intake and exhaust

i do agree about f-bodies being the best bang for your buck. You can pick up a 93-97 that has some miles and needs a little love for 5k if you look. A buddy of mine bought a 94 gt ta for 5k, needs a paint job, but the the car is flawless otherwise and shifts like a bavarian wonder car.
I pulled up to the owners house with my car and the owner came out and asked what kinda car i had. I said "same one your selling man". He couldn't beleive what i did to the looks of the car. His wife even came out and told him that maybe he shouldn't sell his if he could make it look like mine.
True story.
Peace

I made a mistake I guess confusing the LS1's and the LT1's, I'm still new to my research in firebirds. What exactly do you mean by the rearend not being able to hold up for long? Do you mean in terms of re-sale or engine life?

I think he means by twisting the driveshaft clean offa it the first time you step into it :p

I don't know what would be worst...putting on sticky tires with a 10 bolt and breakin' the rearend or twisting the driveshaft :shakehead
So now with the 12 bolt...I only have to worry about the driveshaft.

I mean with higher than stock levels of horse power and sticky tires the gears in the rear diferential can break when you launch it. Or you could twist/break a drive shaft or snap a rear axel. Basically you need to upgrade the stock 10bolt rear end with a stronger 12bolt or 9inch rear end and in some cases a stronger drive shaft as well. Also with higher hp levels a built auto trans or a stronger clutch could be required.

LS1 has tremendous power potential. We've done headwork on a few that are in '99 Camaros. One in particular, is VERY fast. It runs 11.40s all week, and still delivers about 22 MPG on the road. He runs a Comp XR cam.
There are stories of GTOs with LS1 going high tens from a shop in SoCal. I would be interested in knowing WHICH shop, if anyone out there has information.

ive seen and are about to do a heads cam package on an lt1 that will give me 450hp to the wheels, and still be street driven. also get about 28 mpg on the highway...... it should be in 11's with someone who knows how to drive

With all the new "goodies" out there for LSx engines, the stroker kits are the easiest way (not necessarily cheaper) to get to 500-plus HP. Eagle and Lunati both, have excellent kits with good steel forgings for cranks and rods, light pistons and good rings and bearings.
Building LSx is not something for an ametuer, nor the faint of heart in the business. There are VERY specific torquing procedures, when, if not followed, WILL cause catestrophic failure. A new "mindset" is required to be successful with these engines.
All in all, it's beautiful design. It must be stated again, though, as many don't seem to pay attention: It is NOT a small block Chevy. There are VERY few design features, and even fewer parts, that come from SBC. The heads are a work of art! The valve train is quite compact and very stable. The oiling system is modern, using the crank to drive the pump, rather than a gear off the cam.
There are reports of GTOs going in the 10s, with relatively stock configurations, using upgraded technology more than engine modifications.

http://www.advancedinduction.com/
with a big cam and a few precise valvetrain options i think i can pull out 450 whp, if nto come real close
with some forged pistons, new bearrings, and the right cam. if you plan on running the engine to high like 7500- 8500rpm's range you could get 500whp but it wont be all that much fun on the street.
or it will be all kinds of fun on the street, all depends on what your idea of fun is.

Hey guys thanks for all the input. I just won a 95 v6 off ebaymotors.com with a rebuilt engine for $1,600. Just thought I'd let you guys know I'm one of you'z now. I wanted the 5.7L, but the price was right on this, and i don't have to go anywhere for shipping, the guy is 5 miles from me!

Oh, and I'm still confused about this rear-end thing. The car i purchased claims to have the entire "rear-end" reabuilt, so I'm assuming it's been built to sustain performance parts? I'm meeting with the dude tomorrow, but he doesn't seem to knowledgeable, he claims to have boughten the car from someone else in november.

well if it was rebuilt to gm specs than it cant handle much power....
do you plan on drag racing this car at all? if you leave the car tires the way they are and dont run drag radials, then you arent putting too much stress on the drivetrain and it should be able to hold a good amount of power. if you do put sticky tires on there than you will have to do something about the rear end. they sell all kinds of stuff for the rear end so just ask us more specific stuff and we can help out.

The only car in 1997 that got the LS1 was the Corvette.
LS1 with stock heads/cam/cubes recently ran a 10.89 second pass. It was transplanted into a early 4th gen F-Body V6, so it was light. Still VERY impressive.
My LS1 made 343.43 RWHP with headers, exhaust, airbox lid, MAF, and LS6 intake. Running with cats. No tune. Not bad for basic bolt-ons.
