I bought a used 2003 Expedition in late Sept. Since then I have had to replace three coils. Any idea why it blows coils?

blew 2 coils on my '97 in 1 week, so i feel your pain! and them suckers ain't cheap either! how many miles are on the odometer? mina hsa 128k, and the recommended interval for spark plug changes is 100k, mine had almost roughly .078k clearance, new are set at .047k, this puts an extra load on the coils.

but the dealer tells me that blowing coils is uncommon, somehow i don't believe them, and a spark plug change at the dealer will run around 250$$
good luck

Mine had 80,000 km on it when I bought it and now has just under 86,000 km and 3 new coils.

The first coil went and cost me $70 cdn plus labour and they also replaced all plugs. Six days later the next coil went and suddenly the part was $142.

I have a call into another Ford shop and they guy is looking into it.

I do love the truck tho

I had 3 coils go out in the past month which makes 5 total in a year.I had 80,000 miles on the car. I talked to the guy in the service department and he said since it had been raining he has had quite a few expeditions in with coils going out.

If you find the right parts person you can buy just the rubber boots but in their defense it is hard to find on certain parts computers and they should be replaced every 60k just like plug wires. Also when you replace the plugs get motorcraft(100k lifetime) because others just don't last and put a little electrical grease on the end where the boot goes on the plug.

I've never bought an Expedition coil, but I've put in a lot. The intake/cylinder head angle makes a little river that drains down into the coils causing a short. Any extra strains on those coils just burns them up. That's also why just replacing boots doesn't always save them.

I have a 2003 expedition and after a tornado hit.. large amounts of rain..I had 3 coils fail ($600), then 1 week later another failed ($200), then oxygen sensor failed ($200).. I have been advised to replace the other 4 coils (another $800) and that the rest of the oxygen senfors will fail,, it currently is misfiring.. is there any way to stop the cause of the failures? Otherwise this will happen again... any ideas?

This is where doing it yourself pays off. Seal the boot to the plug and head with plenty of dielectric grease to keep the water out. It's not a sure cure, but it will help.

I am coming up on 100K on my 98 Exp. When ever you decide to change the plugs it is a "must" the coils boots be replaced with new. If the old coil boots are used you almost certainly will short out one or more of the coils.
