yeah, the Camaro and Mustang are both considered "pony cars".. i think they used that term because they are a more affordable sports car than the Corvette which is considered a true muscle/sports car..

It IS Muscle... The first to start the 'muscle car' phase was the GTO in 1964, and then all else followed.

Who ever said it was a 'pony' car must have mistaken it for a Ford.

all years of camaro have been considered muscle cars, now what someone may have been thinking of is the fact that for a long time the mustang was only considered a pony car during its starting years cuz it wasn't very powerful or fast (cept for the cobra jet), the only part of the camaro that is pony car is the body, long hood/short deck.

muscle cars were family cars with trunks and big engines. chevelles, GTO's, 442's, superbirds, chargers and such, were all full size big engine muscle cars. They were killer in strait line races, but lacked the handling of road course cars. Hence the reason so many of them wound up wrapped around trees on the side of the highway.

the mustang was the first mid size car to take up the high hp engines in 64 i think. it was a helluva lot smaller than what ever else was out there giving it much better handling, because it was smaller, more manuverable, like econo box cars, but had the same engine, it wasnt the muscle car, and it wasnt a grocery getter, it was a pony car (due to the mustang name) so pony car describes the type of car the mustang was. the camaro followed suit and by the days standards was smaller, but was fitted with hardcore drivetrain parts, and thus was filed under the same classification as the mustang, it too was a pony car. think of it this way...

Muscle car = NHRA / dragstrip
Pony car = SCCA / Trans Am (but still damn competitive at the strip as well)

Think of it like this... a "Muscle car" is considered a big car with a big engine. The "Pony cars" are cars light/midsized/economy cars with big engines. Ford was the first to do it with the mustang, so everything afterwards that fit the bill of "light car with a big engine" was labeled a "Pony Car". Basically what Iroc said.

No, the Camaro is considered a muscle car too. It is both. A muscle car is a mid sized car, or smaller, with a big engine first being the GTO. They lasted until the mid or early seventies when the smog/oil crisis hit. The pony term came from the long hood and short deck which originally came from the Mustang then the Camaro. They are all muscle cars. Pony cars are just a sect of the muscle cars.

Mustangs were called secretary's cars, by the way. Even Carrol Shelby called them such. He didn't even want to work on them at first to make the GTs.

In the truest form of the definition a Mustang and Camaro are not Muscle Cars. A Muscle car was a mid-size car with a large cubic inch motor. First argueably being the Chevy Biscayne wit a 409 option which matriculated to the GTO and the all the others to follow.

A Mustang when introduced in 1964 was definetly not a mid-sized car by 60's standards. So this automatically removes it from being a Muscle Car but with it's lightweight, sporty look and feel, and available small V8 option and selling 22,000 cars the first day available, instantly created a whole new car segment termed the "Pony car".

Chevy not to lose out on a new market to make money came out with the Camaro, then others such as the AMX followed. And although these cars started to get a lil more portly in weight and the engines started getting just as big as the muscle cars. They were still not considered muscle cars in the 60's.

Here is where time and history start to blur it together. Since the Mustang and Camaro's by the late 60's early 70's had gotten closer and closer to being muscle cars and the muscle cars like the Chevelle, GTO, Cuda had been killed off from high gas prices and insurance rates. Mustangs and Camaro's picked up the name Muscle Car cause it was the only powerful american left from that era even though by definition they are not.

And yes Mustangs where created and marketed originally for secratery's and the 18-24 market. And the Mustang maybe gay but at least they still make it unlike some cars..... :2cents:

eh, I have just given up on the whole deffinition of a Muscle car and a Pony car and all the other generic BS.... If it's fast and makes power, it's good. Who cares what they call it, it's not going to make me feel like I am more of a bad ass because I can call my car Muscle, or whatever.

As far as the whole mustang being marketed to woman.... Don't get me wrong but, if I were to buy a car based on who it was targeted to, I would take the one that appealed to the woman. Maybe some of you on this forum want to attract other guys but, not I. :icon16:

sure sure...that's what everyone says. I noticed the mustand thing here in slc is more defined for men and camaros for women.I think I only seen like 2 4th gens rollin with a dude behind the wheel rest , damn women...what the hell is that ? 95% of the 'stangs here got some mugs behind the wheel.

i rarely see girls in camaros around here....they all drive stangs. (im not just saying that to argue)

I know a lot more women who drive stangs. Whenever I see someone driving a Camaro, I look and 99% of the time it's a man behind the wheel.

most women around here drive saturns and hondas.. but for the most part the people i see driving mustangs are either women or older guys(30-50).. and camaros are usually younger guys (18-28) rarely do i see a girl driving a camaro around here..

Yeah, it's the same here, there's mostly girls in Mustangs, more often than not older women. It's extremely rare to see a woman that drives a Camaro around here, especially one that looks young. Since I got really deep into cars a few years ago, I've seen two hot girls driving a F-body on the road.

thats because you're cool enough, most girls just arent cool enough to drive an F-Body... however there are some exceptions.. my girlfriend will be added to the list when she buys my camaro this spring..

I see a ton of women driving 4th gen V-8 F-bodies and to their credit they usually smokin hot!!!
