On Star Question

Tomorrow we'll be trading in the H2 for a 9 passenger Yukon XL. With 5 kids now we needed a bigger rig. Unfortuantely the 9 seater Yukon XL (or suburban) can be had with only cloth and no On Star. Does anyone know if the On Star can be retrofit?

Well, my Yukon has 4 captains with all leather and Onstar. It is considered a 7 passenger vehicle. What is this a used vehicle you are talking about?

Can you get by with an 8-seater? ;)

But I don't think the GM OEM Onstar can be easily added to a vehicle that didn't originally come equipped with it; I take it you plan on subscribing to Onstar? Heck I have Onstar but don't plan on using it after the free 1-year subscription expires...XM, OTOH, is a different story...;)

We need a 9 seater for all the kids and grandparents. I found that Sirius does something like On Star as well.

How's that? I mean, some neat things that come with the way OnStar is integrated into the factory GM setup is that it can do things like unlock your doors and pinpoint your vehicle location--assuming of course you have an OnStar subscription. Does Sirius offer/will offer something that'll do stuff like unlock your doors if you're locked out?

I thought all GM SUV's came equipped with Onstar? Maybe I'm behind the times - heck, I thought an XL could only be configured to seat eight. Is there a front bench option? :)

The 9 seaters are basically the low end of the Yukon XL or suburban spectrum. I opted for the Yukon XL because the seats "felt" better and it had upgrades the Suburban didn't even offer as an option. Plus, I am changing out the entire front end with Denali parts.

In between the front row seats is a jump seat that doubles as an arm rest when down. The other remaining two rows are bench as well creating space for 9. It fits our family fine and although there is not a leather option, with 5 kids I won't do leather in a family car (already tried that with the Hummer). My only gripe is that on this base model, you cannot get Onstar or Bose even as an option.

Wow - I learn something new every day. :) I wonder if Jason @ JP Customs might have something for you? My guess is that he sees a lot of things come through his shop.

Honestly - and I apologize in advance for the tangent - I wish Bose wasn't an option on my truck. I've never liked the sound of their systems, but wholesale replacement really isn't an option I want to consider.

Ah, c'mon Jerry--it ain't THAT bad!

Yeah, the Bose setup could be better but it isn't that bad for an all-stock car audio sound system, soundwise...at least it's "passable" in my truck. I think the factory premium amp (Y91 RPO code option) in my DXL may have something to do with it; my '03 YXL came with the Bose and the sound quality in it was nowhere near as decent as that in the DXL. Of course, my opinion is subjective; YMMV.

But then again, you know what they say: Friends don't let friends buy Bose!
