Odd Noise after 150mph

When I reach 150mph at 6600rpm the car makes a Rattling noise, kinda sounds like pop cans rattling. Dealer could not find anything wrong. Has anybody heard a similar noise in their E46's?

ahh ok your car is crying telling you i am going to blow up :nono: . by the way any car going 150 over will make all kinds of noise. :screwy:

Kind of hard to imagine a shop taking it up to 150mph.

You may need to find a chassis Dyno, and at 150 mph if there is no noise then it is a wind issue.

Im curious what modifications you have on your 325Xi that removed the limiter and allow it to hit 150mph. A stock 325Xi should not be hitting 150mph, hence the limiter. 323imankiks is right, most cars, especially a sedan like a 325Xi all make noise at high speeds.

150 not with that car...

I'm sure there's no limiter on a 325iX. You only find limiters on cars that can go beyond 250kph (155mph). According to BMW figures a 325iX will run out of steam at 212kph (just 132mph). However don't confuse theses figures with speedo readings :nono: at these speeds speedo errors are REALLY exaggerated.... though admittedly seeing 150+ readings seems a bit too much for a stock car..

PS If you have some kind of modification done to your car it may be the cause of the noise..either way try being more conservative when confronted with an empty stretch of highway :grinno:

Unless you hit 150 everday and not once a month for fun why are you worried about it? As long as the car doesnt make the noise while its normaly driving its fine. Its not like you fly down turnpikes hittin 150 every day.

According to this site the Xi is electronically limited to 128mph. BMW does limit the 3-Series and the 5-Series well under 155mph because the engines just can't handle it stock.

First of all I should say that the figures I mentioned in my first post refer to the E30 325iX :uhoh: and not the E46 ..... which being more powerfull is even faster.. BMW states it goes 234kph(=145mph) at which point you should be reading well over 150mph....which refers to the *European* version....which is NOT limited to 128mph...and its engine can handle it stock very well thank you :grinno:
Now why a US-legal 325xi is only allowed to get to 128mph is a matter to investigate :sly: even the smog-restricted 170hp should be enough for 140mph...does BMW of North America think this engine is gonna blow up beyond 128 mph  their german bosses certainly don't think so...

uhh... the e30 325ix only had 171 hp and topped out at 126 mph... (even without a limiter)

wow you don't know anything about automotive engineering or BMW, do you? Speed limiters are not determined only by a factor of how much power is available, but by the overall stability of the factory stock car at such high speeds. Also, BMW north america doesn't determine what the american speed limiters will be set at :lol2: ; that's determined by BMW research and development teams as the car is being designed in germany. One reason might possibly be that there is not a road in north america designed with speeds that high in mind.

1) Why would you mention the E30 when the original poster was referring to the E46.
2) The "European" versions ARE limited. Go pick up an "CAR" or "EVO" magazine and you'll notice they are all limited, even the M3.
3) They only hit 128mph because it isn't safe for that car, which isn't designed to do 150mph.

I suggest that you try to be more clear when referring to different cars. This thread is about an E46, as stated in the 1st post, then you started talking about the E30, which has nothing to do with this. Just from the sound of your writing I can tell you don't really know too much about BMWs, which is ok, since this forums is about learning, but don't try to play yourself off as someone who knows everything. You should do more research before you post and make sure you are talking about the same car as the rest of us...

I already admitted I was too fast with my first post didn't I? I did not notice that the poster was talking about the E46. And no I don't know everything no one does. In order to be accurate I check with books, magazines and sites and I am 100% correct in my second post cause all the info I posted on the 325xi/E46 comes from the german yearly Auto Katalog a publication of Auto Motor und Sport...what did you think? That I am pulling the info out of my head?!.....I suggest that YOU check your info and DONT TRY TO BE SMART AND OFFENSIVE. Now to the points:
1.Already answered that twice

2.NO they're NOT. I don't have to pick up anything. I have Car mag right here. Let me read to you:

325i manual: 149mph
325i auto: 147mph
325xi manual: 145mph
325xi auto: 144mph
330i manual: 155mph
330i auto: 154mph
330xi manual: 154mph
330xi auto: 150mph
M3 manual:155mph (limited)

128mph limit you say?

3. Apparently not true.

The only car that BMW limit at so low a speed as you mention is the X5 4.4 with the Comfort and Exclusive packages to 130mph. If you order the 4.4 Sport with the sport tyres you can hit 149mph. Again I'm only talking about European versions. I have no idea about US versions.

i believe that older bimmers are limited to 122mph and the newer ones are limited to 155 mph. this is done electronically.

also, it is not true that bimmers are not designed to go over 150. they must be since they are designed in ermany to be driven in germany. the bimmers that are sold in europe and the states are mostly (read again, mostly) the same, sometimes just the final drive is different on some models.

the funny thing is that the moderator always seems to be the one that is always trying to act smart and offensive. this should simply be a place for bimmerheads to gather and discuss in peace, not a place where you try to the "man".

define older. The e30 had no electronic limit whatsoever, it was just not very aerodynamic and didn't have massive amounts of power, thus it had a low top speed.

did anybody ask a BMW mechanic that has gone to school to under stand this car??? I know the speed is controlled electronically. my car will fly up to 129mph then cut out and it will not go over 5000 rpm in 5th gear.. this is a 94 325i

uhhh no...European E30s topped out at 132 mph according to figures published in Auto Motor und Sport (find out what that is)

as for the rest of your comments
Thank you for the...lesson on how BMW design their cars! Thank God they design their cars in... Germany too! As far as BMW of NA all I have to say to you is: Do you understand the concept of *sarcasm*?

I do have all official *factory* figures for all european versions since 1985. They're listed in the back pages of the yearly german Auto Katalog (a publication of Auto Motor und Sport). A euro '94 325i (not ix) is listed as follows (apparently very different from US versions):

2494cc
192hp (PS DIN) at 5900rpm
245Nm at 4200rpm (don't know how it translates in lb/ft)
Top Speed: 233kph (that's 145mph)

I think this thread has gone way off-topic. The person that was asking about his/her E46 325xi making noises beyond 150mph never explained where he/she is or what version he/she has but never got an answer either!
