Bad fuel filter in a '95 Pathfinder?

Got my '95 2 months ago from a local dealer with 80k miles. Never got good gas mileage but in the past week it's suddenly gotten much worse. The ironic part is that I began the tune up process last weekend by replacing the spark plugs (planning to do wires/distributor cap/rotor in the next week or two)...and it's since then that I've noticed a decrease in mpg. Also, the vehicle reeks of gasoline after driving it- could this be symptomatic of a bad fuel filter, or something more serious?
