If someone has a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix and they change the part that keep you from going a certain speed with a newer pontiac; like the 99''-03 could that make the 97" pontiac faster? I heard that they made the 00-03 faster then the 97-99, is that true

Are you referring to "Top Speed?" Our car's top speed is regulated by the PCM. A '97 PCM is different (it even looks diffent) than a '97-'03 PCM.

just to clear this up for tech the PCM is a computer..much like the one you're on right now. it's programmable has memory and processor, etc. it handles tons of things going on in the car. all it does is run a program(lots of times a minute)...the govenor is merely an "if" statement in the program that says if the carSpeed > 110 (or whatever it is) then stop car from accelerating. in order to get rid of the govenor all you have to do is change that number to whatever you want (255 being the max for that memory variable) and vwalah

yes, but tech still seemed confused on the whole "the pcm does it all" idea so i decided to elaborate since he said he wasnt no car pro.

Warrior i think the difference was in the GT vs. the GTP...the govenor is set at the factory and is not different per state.

my 97 GTP would only do 111 stock, dont know what it will do now with new PCM, dont really care either..

You don't care how fast it will go, or don't care for a new PCM?
Reprogrammed PCM doesn't do it "all". It just is the part that seems to pulls it all together. I found with all three of my GP's, you hit the point, that you have to add it. Was the part I would start with, and go from there.

That's good explanation for some who understands compter programming, which by the way I do , what about the average joe trying to get their GP GT to say 115 or 120. That 105 sh** sucks. I know the engine can give me alittle more, safely might I add.

Well for the average Joe, you tell them it like a wall switch. With the lights off, you don't move too fast. But turn the lights on , so you can see.

Kid, don't sound so frustrated I understand what your saying.
Lets just sum it all up....The gov. sets your top speed and if you wanna go faster the you have to reprogam tour chip which is inside the computer. and they are not set by state to state but set only by factory settings.,

Still looking for the rims. May never put the hood on. And it's running way to good to take the chance of the stock ram-air box back on her.
But she's getting there. A couple more years I'll be able to get $500.00 for her.

Just took it out to go to GM for some small parts.
It has to go back to paint shop. Swirl marks everywhere. We are going to have to live with pictures I took in the rain Christmas day.
I swear, no one in Florida can do anything right on a car. I have a friend that is redoing a 55' Chevy Nomad. He's paying to have it all done. Been almost 2 years and it's about half done.

jeez again back to the paint shop? have you considered going to another facility? or are they doing all this patch up work for free and you dont wanna pay anymore?

They have to fix anything they mess up. I told them I would sell them the car, and they can just give me back all the money I spent in the first place. The guy told me that he already have a 5.0 Mustang. Told him I would run him title for title. Then he would need a new car. And I could plant flowers in his.

wow, 55 on christmas and i swear to god i would be out in shorts and a t-shirt, that would feel so warm to me right now. Here in Lansing, MI it has been like 10 degrees with the wind chill below 0 for the past few weeks, should get warmer this week, says its gunna be back up to the 20s and 30s, now i can get out and do some snowboarding :) :) :)
