help heat problems

my car seems to want to over heat, i installed a 160 thermostat (slp) and a fan switch and it still wants to heat up, i dont understand, it has oil comsumption what is the problem and how can i fix it

check your radiator, and radiator cap, have it checked to see if its holding pressure, how hot is it running???

i have checked the radiator, i even flushed it out, and i bought a new radiator cap, it wants to run between 210-220, i know 210 is normal, but since i bought it it has always been below 210, when it is at 210-220 it starts to smell like burn

Normal heat , if it was running cooler before it was probably just a matter of cooler air. Mine was running up in 220 and I have a v-8 which is normal but I wasn't happy with that so I ran a stand aloneoil cooler , tranny cooler and a lightweight aluminum radiator. Took out everything that would stop direct airflow from hitting the radiator or engine , / AC condensor air damns , etc. Put some 'water wetter' in it and now it runs around 195. still waiting for my power programmer so I can force fan kick on at 198 and shut off at 185. It's probably just a matter of age / wear/ old radiator. Try getting an entire cooling system flush , not just the radiator. change your oil , change all your fluids. that helped mine but those are given / easy things to figure out. if none of that helps ( if you even try that stuff. ) then it may be a electrical , mechanical defect somewhere. maybe run it for codes.

if your eating up oil , you may have a blown head gasket and your coolant is getting into your oil , thinning it out and spitting it out the valves / exhaust. run your look under your oil cap for white goo or your dip stick. if there is white goo , you got some blown head gaskets. if not , i'd say some screwed valves.

Maybe you have a air pocket. After you installed the thermostat did you bleed the cooling system? Oil comsumption on LS1's is normal... Is your car still under warranty? If so GM might have to eat that engine.

yes i did flush the whole cooling system, i think i did bleed the thermostat, but i might of done it wrong.how do i do it. and i have told that my valves are screwed, how much is that to fix, and what parts do i use,but it wanted to heat up before i put the thermostat. please help one problem is if the car is on the fans wont turn on, if i turn off the car and then turn it on then the fans kick in. i think the car heats up with is off. thats why i bought the fan switch so i can manually do it when it is on, so it can remain cooler, but now it wants to heat up no matter if i put the fans on

i am out of warranty, can the oil comsuption be causing the heating up, because when it heats up it wastes oil i notice that

Yes oil consumption can create overheat due to increase viscocity. Metal grinding metal + friction = Lots of heat. Lack of oil = bad bad.

I've heard some people been saying things about heater cores , you could try that. A valve job on your car would be probably around 600-700 bucks to do. I knew a car who smashed his flat again with a hammer..but about 5k latter , the heads on the valves fell off from the pressure and shot into the exhaust...not so good for an idea.

well for an earlier question i let the air out of my cooling system by just taking off the radiator cap and starting the car when the fluid comes to the top of the radiator wala but it could be different for the ls1 also have u tried replacing the temp sending unit yet

youre probly going to need to have your piston rings replaced. the oil consumption is going to get worse, and could cause secondary problems, such as overheating. id start there. also, check in between your radiator and ac condencer. alot of times you can get a plastic bag, leaves, and other crap sucked up in there and it blocks flow, which causes a overheating condition.

i have the same thing going on with my car right now its 3800 though and i come to find out it was a head gasket, lucky for my though it was leaking out side the engine so it didnt mix with the oil. Look at your heads by your intake manifold chances are there could be antifreeze and thats the burnign your smelling. as for oil consumption im not sure mine was fine.. Hope this helps
